The festive buntings are still up, there is still a rangoli in the compound, and the fairy light on the door – all a testimony to Diwali, celebrated a few weeks ago by Priyanshu Jain. The two storied house in Tirupati Garden colony of Meerut represents the bereaved family now, where they are sitting down in one of the rooms, after a prayer meeting that was held for Priyanshu.
On November 10, Priyanshu, 23, a second year MBA student in Mudra Institute of Communications at Ahmedabad was killed when a mysterious assailant stabbed him in an incident believed to be sequel to a dispute on the roads. Subsequently, in the case, two days later, the Crime Branch of Ahmedabad police arrested, police constable Virendrasinh Padheriya.
In the FIR lodged at the Bopal police station in Ahmedabad by Priyanshu’s batchmate Prithviraj Parakshitdas Mahapatra, 28 years, the two had gone to a cafe and a bakery after visiting a tailoring shop at 7.45 pm.
Back from their college around 10.30.pm while on their way to a turning of the road, a car at “full speed” came “dangerously” near them and Priyanshu sitting pillion on Prithviraj’s bike suddenly raised his voice at the car driver for a recklessivals. The man then turned around, chased their bike down and, after words were exchanged, he stabbed Priyanshu. He was admitted in Saraswati Hospital and later was shifted to Zydus Hospital in Ahmedabad and he was declared dead.
Sneaking out for a while to see the visitor off, Pankaj Jain, 57, a chartered accountant said, “We have lost everything; there is nothing left.” I am in no condition to talk. I am dead inside.”
Reenu Jain, mother of Priyanshu said, “Usne mere pyare bacche ko maar diya (He killed my dear son). At least if he was so angry he could have taken a stick and hit him why stab him? What if I should have taken my son with me?”
Sister Geetika Jain, 27, claimed that she spoke to Priyanshu five days before the mugging happened; he called around 8.30 pm. “He requested for money to buy airpods and informed me he has an interview for a job at a world class IT firm on 24/11/20. He had gone with his friend outside the campus to get the suit tailored for an interview. The next phone call I received was from one of Priyanshu’s friends claiming that he was transporting him to the hospital since he was mugged. Still she said she did not expect it would be a small accident and he would die.
The neighbours of the Jains had nice words to say about the “smart and gentle boy” who went to Delhi after his Class 12 to pursue his BBA from Indraprastha University.
Altogether when Priyanshu got into MICA, we all were very happy for him. Still in another five months time, it would have ended and he would have secured a job added Vaibhav Kapoor, a 35yr neighbour.
His friends were in shock. We used to quarrel over football as kids and rivals’. It was such a short time ago Sanjana muses. “ Sometimes, we would go to the park and within the compound of the colony. Despite growing up he was a football fanatic and a great fan of Lionel Messi. Anything you asked him about Messi, he would tell you the correct answer.”
