Bollywood actor John Abraham had little anger to hide in his dislike for stars in the movie industry who take up paan masala and gutka. It has been an ongoing discussion between the lovers of certain film actors, who grace advertisements promoting the injurious products, and some of which are have started avoiding affliation with paan masala brands following public outcry. Every year, many cigarette brands give lip service to the idea of a smoke-free world while pumping millions into billboard star power; Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, and Shah Rukh Khan are stars known to have promoted paan masala and gutka brands secretly.
In Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, John stated that he is very intolerant of actors who speak and act as brand ambassadors for health and fitness, but consume paan masala. He said that he does not ever want to risk his ‘selling death’ himself.
He added that he has a desire of portraying a ‘role model’ something he opined that fans will feel the stench of hypocrisy should his actions contradict the teachings. “If I use integrity in my life, and if I am real in my life and then I get up and preach, then I’m a role model but if I am pretending in public and I turn behind their back and act like a totally different person, they will find that,” he said.
He went on, “People speak about fitness, and all those who endorse paan masala, I love all the actor friends and am not for a single moment insulting them. But this is the principle: I will not endorse death; do you know the turnover of paan masala is Rs 45000 crore? The Government is supporting it, which is why it is not banned.”
He said that they have made their ‘choice’ not to consume from these companies, and the ‘excuses’ people give, that these products are often sold as a ‘mouth freshener’ does not count. He angrily questioned the man, “You are selling death, how many people can you live with that”? John stressed to the audience that he does not wish to offend any of his colleagues who are actors, yet he will be expressing his views.
Earlier, two superstars Ajay Devgan and Akshay Kumar have been possibly criticized for endorsing paan masala or gutka brands. Akshay had declared that he would no longer be compromising such promotions, and pointed out that an advertisement that has aired after this declaration was shot before the expiry of his contract.
“These ads were shot on 13th October, 2021. I have not had anything to do with the brand ever since I publicly declared that I stopped endorsing the product. Law cannot detain the running of the already shot ads beyond the next month.” he posted on X.
Akshay had come under criticism for featuring in one such ad along with Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan Earlier in the year 2022, Akshay had posted on X saying, “I am sorry. I would like to apologise to you, all my fans and well-wishers. Your reaction over the past few days has deeply affected me. While I have not and will not endorse tobacco, I apologise for the disdain.”
