Earthquake in Japan: A powerful earthquake of hit southwestern of Japan, the country’s meteorological agency reported on Monday. As is customary with earthquakes, tsunami alerts have been launched by the relevant authorities.
Tsunami Warning in Japan
Tsunami warnings were issued for Miyazaki Prefecture, where the temblor was centered, in the southwestern island of Kyushu, as well as nearby Kochi Prefecture, shortly after the quake struck at 9. It happened at 19 p.m., local time, according to the agency.

Earthquake in Japan: The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) raised the advisory for tsunamis of up to 10cm (three ft) high. The USGS has also lowered the preliminary magnitude to 6.9, and pointed out that there is no tsunami risk from this earthquake. The JMA nevertheless asked the public to refrain from entering coastal waters.
All you need to know is that one can occur and it can be repeated again and again. ”Stay out of the sea or avoid areas close to the shoreline,” the agency said on X. In the meantime, no shamings where observed at Ikata nuclear power plant. It was not obvious at the time how much damage had been caused. This is because Japan is located on the western of the Pacific Basin, which is otherwise referred to to as the ‘Ring of Fire, a region characterized by volcanic and seismic activities.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to expect a tsunami of up to one meter in height and avoid the shoreline. It is important to understand that tsunami can happen again and again. As the JMA said on X, “ ”As such, it is strictly advised not to venture into the sea or go near the coastal region.”

Two small tsunamis of approximately 20 centimetres high were measured at two ports in the area, said the weather agency.
Tsunami in Japan
Local media said there were no initial reports of casualties but Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK, aired live images from the area that revealed no apparent damage, clear skies, boats in operation and traffic proceeding as usual. Located on the western shore of Pacific “Ring of Fire” and occupying territory on four of the seven giant tectonic plates, Japan is one of the most seismically active countries of the globe.
Tsunami in Japan: The island country with a population of roughly 125 million suffers about 1500 tremors a year and hosts about 18% of global seismic activity. The vast majority of them are considered to be relatively minor but the impact they have depends on the site or location at which it occurs or its depth when it is found beneath the surface of the Earth. On New Year’s Day 2024 a 7.5-magnitude quake hit the Noto peninsula, close to 470 people in Japan’s biggest shake for over a decade died though the majority of victims were elderly people.
Last August, JMA increased chances of what it calls a megaquake, after a 7.1-magnitude shake that injured 15. That was a special of a shake called the subduction megathrust quake that has unstance itself in pairs in the past and in the process leads to disastrous tsunamis.
The advisory was on the 800-kilometre (500-mile) deep undersea Nankai Trough running parallel to Japan’s Pacific coast, situated over the geologic boundary of two tectonic plates. The advisory was lifted one week later.
The JMA said Monday that it was investigating possible relationship with the latest quake. Japan has very demanding construction codes aimed at guaranteeing structures’ ability to stand up to a major quake and ordinarily stages practice runs to prepare for it.
Japan 2011 Earthquake
Japan 2011 Earthquake: But it will never forget the 9.0-magnitude undersea quake off northeastern Japan in March 2011 that generated a tsunami that has been estimated to have killed about 18,500 people or left them missing.
Third, the 2011 tsunami knocked out three reactors which went into meltdown in the Fukushima nuclear plant making it the worst post-war disaster still in Japan and it is the most severe since Chernobyl.
This was after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Fukushima in March 2022, and affected large portions of eastern Japan, killing three people. There was a massive earthquake in the capital city, Tokyo just over a hundred years ago in 1923.
