In his defense, 22-year-old Zepto CEO Aadit Palicha claimed that these comments stem from an interview of Daksh Gupta, an Indian-origin CEO who stood up for 84-hour workweeks.
After Zepto’s head – Aadit Palicha – waded into the discussion about remote work, saying he has “nothing against work-life balance.” However, a section of the internet is convinced that his post is a response to another viral post on Reddit which accused Zepto of promoting a toxic work culture.
What did Aadit Palicha post?
I am not against a concept like work-life balance. Nevertheless, I can confidently say that I would recommend it to all our competitors,” he said on Wednesday morning. He quickly followed up with another post: by the way, that is not my quote I read it somewhere in an interview of Daksh Gupta.
Palicha, 22, was indeed quoting Daksh Gupta, an Indian-origin CEO in San Francisco who has been criticised for supporting an 84-hour week at his AI start-up; he wrote the same words on X last month.
Check out the Aadit Palicha’s post:
People wrote several comments to Palicha’s post, some of them admitting that they themselves read the Reddit post where an anonymous user who said he works for Zepto accused the quick-commerce startup for having a toxic work culture.
The authenticity of the reddit post has not been confirmed as of yet.
Reddit: ‘You think I’m mashing F5 to Russo-bounce toxic work culture clickbait to ambulance chase eagle-eyed about bobbins pouring month-old coffee on myself. Bold strategy! Okay, when is your first appointment today—picking your coffee machine? A second added, “People feel that 8 in the morning is the same as 2 in the morning!” The third said this: ‘Either managers or someone from top brass is driving against the work-life balance.’ The Reddit confession post is not s**t.”
What was the Reddit post ?
For any questions related to Zepto – I have been associated with them for over a year now. I tis one of the most highly toxic work environments out there. The text says: “I want to post this now because it has lots of publicity but only we know how bad things are.”
The Redditor complained about working long hours at the company. They even claimed that in the organisation’s meetings are held at 2 am in the morning because the CEO starts his day at 2 pm saying he cannot wake up early.
Moreover, the post said the company abuses young workers by forcing them to work extremely long hours and preparing for the next “mass layoff.”
Palicha, aged 32, is the second youngest person among the Hurun India Rich List for this year with a total assets worth ₹4,300 crore. He founded it along with his fellow Stanford dropout Kaivalya Vohra in 2021.
The post was meant to pay homage to Daksh Gupta, the 23-year-old, India-born CEO of the AI firm Greptile credited to have promoted extended work days. The same sentiments were expressed by Mr Gupta last month through his social media post in which he created controversy regarding work expectations in present-day technology companies.
As with most things shared online, Mr Palicha’s comment was met with a flood of reactions of different tones and of which many linked it to a current Reddit post that went viral. In that post, someone said that Zepto had a “toxic working environment” while it created pressure on employees by setting high expectations for them.
The post focused on 14-hours’ long working days of employees and brought focus on matters of corporate workers’ well-being into limelight. It also accused him of beginning his day at 2 pm having realised that waking up earlier is not easy hence meetings begin only at 2 am.
The post also mentioned that Zepto employs junior staff to minimize expenses and also strongly proposed that the enterprise would carry out a serious of layoffs in March and some departments of Zepto had stopped recruiting new employees.
