Varijashree Venugopal, A musician who secured her first Grammy nod speaks about working with Jacob Collier and the challenges of independent music makers in India.
Indian singer Varijashree Venugopal who is also a flautist and composer is over the moon after receiving her very first Grammy nomination: Best Global Music Performance for A Rock Somewhere alongside singer-songwriter Jacob Collier. Well, to start with, any words of encouragement or endorsement other than meaningless awards are always inspiring to an artiste as well as an ever growing student of music always feels a pat on the back as a sign of doing something of at least good impact. It sounds like a great acknowledgement, and it puts a booster,’ she told me.

It is great fun to ask her about how this collaboration with Jacob Collier originated and she replied, “I love Jacob Collier for the avid, curious, genius musician that he is. He has personally contacted me he is the one who said that there is the song that he is hearing my voice in and in his mind he could visualize this would be a nice blend.
He had already gotten (musician) Anoushka Shankar on it. Here I had lots of room to just wander around and find the room which I had in this whole making of itself of sound. Jacob was also on tour in India and we also had a musical exchange ‘My mate told me we also met,’ said Jacob During the tour.

Varijashree Venugopal’s Thoughts
Indian singer Varijashree Venugopal believes that this recognition will give more visibility to her music: Hopefully some people who do not even know me may one day turn around and double check some things, and that would be a victory.
An artiste only needs the audience who would be willing and willing to watch the art without bias. It will surely increase the produce indirectness and the perceptiveness, and that is actually the highlight, because most of the time, we missed out on paying attention to things MORE clearly because those things just are not published or promoted as much as, like, actual well-mainstream music.”
Noting the hardships of indie singers, Varijashree has said, “Independent music and independent musicians have always been a problem of the dearth of platforms and discussions or discussions regarding their music to the world.
It is a small field, and most of the independent artistes are still struggling not to mention getting any attention…there are few lucky brains which through hard work give them attention on their own time. But it loads more effort and hard work compared to what would be done if ever there is a ‘hit’ in a film.”
Why Varijashree Venugopal is in the Western World ?
Then exactly why is such specific music like herses celebrated more in the western world than it is in the very country it is originating from? “What is it like here is that mainstream is favoured for the basic reason that they are easily accessible and easy to listen to”. What I am trying to say is that it’s not that there is no complicated or intricate or extensively detail music that is not coming out in mainstream music, there is.
But it’s the platform. It is still unusual in India that one distinguishes between music and films. But over here in the west music is a business on its own, that’s why there is an award such as Grammy Out there is an organization called the Recording Academy it is solely for music And that place he said is where the difference is observed she answers.
