Donald Trump, the President of the United States, is going to open an easier way for those extremely wealthy immigrants to gain citizenship by way of so-called “gold cards”, which could be bought at 5 million dollars.
According to American President, these “gold card” would bring green-card residency status and a way to American citizenship for foreigners. Trump made a prediction that 1 million cards would be sold.
As stated by Mr Trump, the initiative would pay off the national debt in no time. He told reporters that he will replace the “EB-5” immigrant investor visa program – which allows foreign investors putting in millions of dollars to create or preserve jobs in the US – with a “gold card”.
The program, EB-5, washes the people who invest in “green cards”.
“We are going to be selling a gold card… We are going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million,” Mr Trump said.
“Give your green-card privileges and be a part of the path to (American) citizenship, so that wealthy people will be coming into our country by buying this card,” he said.
He added that he would give more details regarding the initiative in two weeks. Pressed if Russians could also participate, he replied that probably some Russian oligarchs might qualify. “Yeah, possibly. Hey. I know some Russian oligarchs that are very nice people,” he said.
About the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program
According to USCIS, “The EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program created by Congress in 1990 is administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to stimulate the U.S. economy through job creation and capital investment by foreign investors.”
“The EB-5 program … it was full of nonsense, make-believe and fraud, and it was a way to get a green card that was low price. So the president said, rather than having this sort of ridiculous EB-5 program, we’re going to end the EB-5 program. We’re going to replace it with the Trump gold card,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told reporters on Tuesday.
