In India, there are many types of healthy and tasty breakfast dishes. These traditional treats mean more than getting energy; they are an important part of our local cultures and communities, since many people begin their days with them.
Lately, some of India’s favorite foods were included in Taste Atlas’ list of the 50 Best Breakfasts. Lately, the popular food and travel guide issued a list of the world’s best breakfasts, scoring them as of June 2025. Misal Pav rated 18th, Paratha (as a general term for breads) placed 23rd and Chole Bhature from Delhi got 32nd rank in the top 50.

Misal is considered one of the most popular dishes from Maharashtrian cuisine. According to Taste Atlas, the spiciness and crispness of the base are required for any authentic misal. You should design it so it looks like a true work of art, and it should bring a lot of colors, usually bright red, brown, orange, and green. This recipe is for those who wish to master misal at home.
Other popular choices on the list, paratha and chole bhature, are connected to mealtime in North India. Still, you can find them throughout the country and there are local versions too. The combination of Chole Bhature is one of the best street foods you can eat in Delhi. To discover attractive places for the same, simply click here.

Misal, Rank-18

It is a traditional dish from Maharashtra and its name means it’s mixed with many ingredients, in which every cook has their own recipe. Yet, the most widespread combo in a misal includes curd, pea or moth bean curry, gravy, seasoned potatoes, and some toppings such as onions, coriander, and tomatoes. Based on the information on Taste Atlas, this dish was mentioned for the first time in the early 20th century.
Paratha, Rank-23

On the website, paratha is listed as an Indian bread that most people eat for breakfast. The word paratha means cooked, stackable dough, because it’s formed from adding flour and other ingredients. This kind of bread is made from whole wheat flour that is baked in ghee and shaped as round, triangular, square, or heptagonal pieces.
Based on the site, common ingredients that are used to stuff parathas include boiled potatoes, cauliflower, garlic, ginger, chili, paneer, and radish. Sometimes, pickles, yogurt, homemade chutneys, or meat and vegetable curries are eaten with Naan. In Punjab, paratha is usually eaten with lassi, a yogurt drink that people enjoy.
Chole Bhature, Rank 32

According to the website, Taste Atlas, the dish is ranked 32, and it consists of both chole, spicy chickpea curry, and bhature, a bread cooked in maida flour. This dish is popular in North India, and it was invented in Delhi in the 1940s.
Most of the time, people serve onions, pickles, mint chutney, and chilled lassi with chicken tikka. Although street carts in North India serve chole bhature, people can easily make it at home too. Even though chole bhature is good anytime, it is most likely to be found for breakfast, where the bhature are stuffed with potatoes or cottage cheese and make the meal very nutritious.
Internet’s Reactions
Even though many praised Kalvalti as top breakfast dish, others were let down because idli and dosa did not make it onto the list. So far, in Iran, few people seem to eat Chole Bhature (number 32).
This situation is not common in the US. Punjabis in India often make this dish, which is why it’s popular. One comment from the netizen reads, “Is it idli and dosa?” A user of Instagram was sad that the English breakfast wasn’t included in the list. It was observed that the English know how to make amazing breakfasts, yet they are not included in the rankings.
