Labubu dolls: For many generations, cultures and communities, dolls have accompanied children and become friends, trusted confidants and tools for using creative thinking. Even before its debut in 1959, Barbie was unique for always growing and including everyone. Shortly after Barbie, American Girl, Bratz and Polly Pocket attracted children and played a big role in influencing fashion.
In 2025, not just kids, but famous personalities like Ananya Panday, Lake from the group BLACKPINK, Rihanna, Dua Lipa and others are mad about the cuddly, crooked-tooth Labubu dolls.
What is the history of Labubu dolls’ creation?
Kasing Lung, a Hong Kong artist, came up with Labubu in 2015 as an element of his series The Monster which was inspired by Nordic folklore. The toy industry added Labubu to its products in 2019 thanks to a team-up with Chinese toy outfit Pop Mart. In addition to other collectibles, these come in the forms of figurines, keychains and plushies. Stores add accessories with holiday themes such as gloves and scarves, to the regular merchandise.

Labubu doll is the latest unboxing trend now.
As Forbes reports, Labubu dolls are sold at prices between $20 and $30 in sets called blind boxes and when someone unpackages them, there is always a surprise, leading to discussions on sites like TikTok and Instagram.
Speaking to Hypebeast, Lung, the man behind Labubu, said that living in the Netherlands was a big influence on his creation. “I liked stories and got influenced by the ancient legends about elves in Europe,” he stated.

According to Lung, since there were no computers or game consoles growing up, he drew dolls with a pen and that’s when he came up with the idea of painting fairy tales.
Looking back, Lung mentioned that in his youth there were no electronic games or computers, so he spent a lot of time drawing dolls with a pen which is why he started wanting to paint fairy tales.
Labubu dolls made by artists who have been popularized by celebrities
Labubu became a well-known pop culture trend mainly due to BLACKPINK’s Lisa last year. There was a Labubu figure hanging out of the handbag of the K-pop star. In the interview, she mentioned that playing with toys was her “little secret obsession”.
Labubu is the most recent accessory Rihanna wore on her handbag and fashion lovers everywhere on the Internet began to discuss it. The style reached India when Ananya Panday wore the Labubu while traveling at the airport.
Thanks to its alliances with Coach and Louis Vuitton as well as top celebrities, Labubu went from being a common toy to becoming a wanted collectible art piece.
What are Labubu Dolls? TikTok’s viral collectible is selling out fast
A funny collection of stuffed dolls known as Labubu has swept the Internet and become the hottest trend on TikTok. Pop Mart, a Chinese toy shop, has made the collection of beast-like creatures with crocodile-like teeth and humorous grins which is now famous all over the world for its many resellers, collectors and influencers.

The same source explains that these dolls tend to cost anywhere from $20 to $30 and they are packaged in boxes whose contents are not revealed until you open them. Because one of the secret Lucky of Loki figures is supposed to surprise you and has a chance of being discovered by only 1 in 72 buyers, accounts for the rising trend of unboxing Lucky of Loki in videos on TikTok.
People aren’t drawn to sports just by accident. Labubu has gained more attention because Rihanna, Dua Lipa and BLACKPINK members have been seen with them.
With sellers not being able to fulfill all the demand, resellers are zooming in on this chance. Fans are buying Limited-run Labubu toys online for thousands of dollars and some have sold for up to $7,000 on eBay. Some unique Vans sneakers with the retro color blocks are now going for price tags over $3,000 on StockX.
How it all Began
The Forbes article says that Kasing Lung, a Dutch artist living in Hong Kong, is the creator of Labubu, who was inspired by Nordic legends. The character appeared in The Monsters Trilogy which was published by Lung in 2015. Its license for figurines was given to Pop Mart in 2019.
Labubu dolls were detained by customs in China after being found in smugglers’ hands. The fascinating rise of Labubu has the same effect as similar TikTok crazes like the Stanley Cup craze which were all about violence, stealing and a growing underground market.
