The Assam government has come down heavily on non-vegetarian food affairs by stating it will soon put restrictions on serving and consuming beef in all restaurants, hotels and other public places, said the state’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.
At a cabinet meeting of the state it was decided to change the law that prohibited the consumption of beef to accommodate for the new rules.
“We have agreed that beef must not be served and consumed in the restaurants, hotel and other public places,” he said during a press briefing here.
Sarma said that the current law on beef consumption is great, but there is no ban in the consumption of beef in restaurants, hotels or on occasions such as religious or social events up to now.
“Now, we have decided to make the law stronger to put a complete ban on consumption of beef in public place also in Assam,” he said.
The chief minister added that during the state cabinet meeting, presided over by him through video conference from Delhi, it was also decided to improve the existing means of access to Guwahati’s Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi airport from a four-lane road to a six-lane one.
He said that the cabinet expansion will be held on December 7 when few new ministers will be sworn in.
Talking to the media after his briefing about the series of meetings he had had in the national capital, Sarma said during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he had sought the approval of various projects which was estimated to cost Rs one lakh crore.
Some of the projects are up gradation of Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemical Limited from two million tonne to five million tonne, Namrup fertiliser plant project costing Rs 10,000 crores and Guwahati Ring Road Projects.

Sarma said his government is also planning to built an expressway from Guwahati to Silchar through Meghalaya at a cost of Rs 25,000 crore which will cut down the time distance between the two places to only five hours from the present 12hours.
Himanta Biswa Sarma has also stated that the new government in the state is also interested in construction of an expressway from Guwahati to Silchar through Meghalaya which is estimated to cost ₹25,000 crores.
In the same regard Assam minister Pijush Hazarika told Congress party to either welcome beef ban or immigration to Pakistan.
In Twitter he wrote: “I dare the Assam Congress to celebrate the beef ban or move to Pakistan.”
