Ukraine Claims Russia has launched an InterContinental Ballistic Missile or ICBM, at Ukraine 24 hours after Vladimir Putin amended Moscow’s nuclear policy. The launch of the ICBM with a conventional warhead is a strong signal for Ukraine and the countries supporting it as for Moscow, which means that its bans should not be violated.

Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles are traditionally(define) configured to deploy a nuclear warhead but maybe easily adapted to deliver conventional warheads. The idea, advancement, architecture and study about ICBMs was supposed to address a country’s fallout.

Moscow’s strong response comes days after US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer permitted Ukraine the use of western long-range cruise and ballistic missiles to strike deep into Russia. Minutes after getting the green light from Washington and London, Kyiv launched a US-produced ATACMS missile and a UK-supplied ‘Storm Shadow’ aimed at Russian territories.

The attack is the first time Moscow has fired an ICBM, said Kyiv, as both sides reported significant increases in the war which previously passed the 1,000 days mark.

In the statement posted on their official website today, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces targeted multiple types of missiles at a central Ukrainian city of Dnipro this morning. They told me the aim was to target the infrastructure of the Ukrainian state.

The statement continued with the words saying that “For instance, an intercontinental ballistic missile was launched in the area of Astrakhan of the Russian Federation.” In the article published by AFP, the source in the Ukrainian Air Force stated that it was the first time since the launch of the war in Ukraine that an ICBM was launched.

When asked why Moscow launched an ICBM, Moscow side declined answering the question. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that he “did not want to comment on this…”.

The Kremlin, though, insisted that it was doing its best to prevent nuclear war after having amended its nuclear policy this week. The new policy permits Moscow to employ strategic nuclear forces to respond to aggression from non-nuclear states and Russia said this should be viewed as an alert to the west.

As we have mentioned in connection with our doctrine there is readiness in Russia for a responsible attitude to make maximum efforts to prevent such a conflict, Nulov said.

In their statement, Ukraine’s Air Force claimed to have intercepted six missiles launched by Moscow, yet they did not clarify whether that Russian ICBM was one of them. Rusian air raids have been accused of burning several houses in Dnipro and dismantling much of the city. An industrial complex, and a rehabilitation center, were also more setback.

Moscow also said that its air defense systems claimed to have shot down two Storm Shadow missiles; however, it did not mention where; whether inside the Ukrainian airspace or its territory.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine that has has crossed more than two-and-a-half year is further shifting from diplomacy or dialogue table following a massive escalation on both sides particularly after crossing the century of war.

It has displayed its resolve with deadly long-range missiles and several world leaders have asked Putin and Zelensky to settle the war diplomatically for an acceptable result.

These missiles have a range of more than 5500 km and they are designed to integrate nuclear chemical and biological payloads. It can also have a conventional payload, which Russia is said to have tested on the RS-26 Rubezh, ballistic missile. The missile is said to have been fired from the Astrakhan region of Russia about 1000 kilometers away from the affected area in Ukraine.

He adds that recordings are shared in social networks or in the channels in Telegram, at least the launching of warheads and their return to the infrastructure in Ukraine. Russia has “refused to comment what of the ICBMs was launched” but Kyiv has stated use.

The release occurs only a day after Putin approved amendments to the nuclear policy. The changes in the doctrine state that an attack initiated by a non-nuclear friendly country of a nuclear-weapon state will be regarded by Russia as a dual attack on it. More recently the aid provided to Ukraine includes operational long-range ATACMS missiles capable of hitting targets deep into Russian territory.

ICBM Missiles And The MIRV Tech

Rubezh is a Russian designed, Solid-fuel Intercontinental Ballistic Missile with Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle electronics. It was not until 2011 when it was developed and for the first time it was tested in 2012 with a bull’s eye shot at a distance of 5,800 km from the launching site.

Almost all types of solid fuels do not require fuelling after firing and these missile types are usually easier to use. It’s an energetic solid made of fuel and an oxidizer each surrounded by a polymer material and enclosed in a metallic shell.

In RS-26 the in-situ conversion of the solid-propellant fuel element liberates huge amount of oxygen energy, bringing about liftoff through the production of thrust.

A ballistic missile has 3 phases –boost phase, mid-course phase and terminal phase; the uppermost point of a missile is known as apogee and ICBMs has apogee more than 4,000km. In the terminal phase, which also known as atmospheric re-entry or final phase, kinetic energy together with the missiles velocity exceed the speed of ten times the speed of sound and this make it difficult for an interceptor missile to catch the missile.

ICBMs MIRV has the capability of involving different targets that are situated at a different place to be wiped out from the same missile containing several war heads. These warheads could also be nuclear, or non nuclear.

These bombs are accurate and can reach out to targets that could be many hundred kilometers away; some of the MIRVed missiles can attack targets that are about 1,500 kilometers apart.

In Dnipro City alone, typical of other regions that have been attacked, the enemy has deployed at least 6 bombs or warheads and the anti-ballistic missile has to deal with such weapons individually. Hence, the ABM systems aim at ending the life of the missile prior to the separation of the warhead stage.

The first country to use MIRV was the US when in 1970 it embarked on operation of a MIRVed ICBM and in 1971 MIRVed SLBM. The Soviets responded just as fast and by the late 1970 reconfigured their ICBMs and SLBMs with MIRVs.

The Treaty eliminated an entire category of weapons, intermediate-range, which was decisive when the INF Treaty was signed to ease tensions between the US and the Soviets in the middle of the Cold War. It involved the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics to withdraw and never again to develop or possess any nuclear and conventional ground launched ballistic and cruise missiles of the intercontinental range of 500-5500 kilometers. That was the first time both blocs agreed to mutual lowering of nuclear stockpile.

Thus, till June 1, 1991, the INF Treaty deadline of eliminating the super-armed systems, the Soviet Union and the United States dismantled a total of 2,692 short, medium and intermediate-range missiles. As of this year, 2019, the United States has officially pulled out of the treaty, which leaves no particular treaty in existence.

    India’s ICBMs and MIRV Tech

This year India has become the sixth country in terms of the first flight tests of Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles (MIRV) with the Agni 5 Inter Continental Ballistic Missile. Defence Research and Development Organisation or DRDO recently tested the MIRV which was under development for sometime and placed India in a class of very few countries possessing such facility.

Agni-5 missile is capable for an operational range of 5,000-plus kilometers that targets cities; the MIRV technology makes many cities under the target, along with a broader safety net and several locations under the missile’s coverage. This they do by using missiles that have an unknown true range.
