On March 2 the 97th Academy Awards took place at Dolby Theatre located in Los Angeles. The daring musical from Jacques Audiard received 13 nominations to lead the nominations. The night concluded with Anora from Sean Baker taking home five Oscars that included Best Actress along with Best Director and Best Film awards together with Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.

The Academy Awards history was made when Sean Baker achieved four wins for his one single film. The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood aired the ABC broadcast of the event which Conan O’Brien hosted and Nick Offerman joined as one of the presenters.
The 97th Academy Awards documented multiple unprecedented milestones during its ceremony. In 2002 Adrien Brody earned his second Best Actor Academy Award by delivering The Brutalist and surpassing Timothée Chalamet for his work in A Complete Unknown.
Two prizes were claimed by Emilia Perez which included Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldana and Best Original Song for the movie. At the Oscars Kieran Culkin received the Best Supporting Actor trophy for his work in A Real Pain.
The Indian Academy received one nomination during the Oscars selection process for Anuja as the short film went up against entries for Best Live Action Short Film. The film ‘I’m Not Robot’ secured the Oscars victory instead of the Indian production supported by Priyanka Chopra and Guneet Monga in spite of their efforts to bring home the trophy this year.

During the event Conan O’Brien paid homage to both victims and heroes who suffered during the recent Los Angeles wildfires before presenting the awards.
The Wicked musical kicked off its performance when actors Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo sang upcoming tracks from the show. Three other performers including Doja Cat and Lisa of Blackpink and Raye honored the famous themes from James Bond movies in a musical tribute. The evening was enriched by a musical performance from Los Angeles Master Chorale as a special appearance.
Conan O’Brien says, ‘Namaskar’: A Hindi greeting goes viral
When first-time host Conan O’Brien addressed Indian audiences in Hindi, this was one of the surprising moments of the 97th Academy Awards. While continuing his usually witty and self-deprecating monologue, O’Brien took a moment to greet viewers in India: “Namaskar. Nashte ke saath Oscar kar raha hai aap log,” the translation being “Greetings to the people of India, it’s morning there, so I hope you’re having breakfast with the Oscars.”
His spontaneous Hindi greeting took many by surprise and soon became a meme upon hitting the online arena.
The opening monologue of O’Brien included humor directed at several nominees, including a funny clip of him coming out from Demi Moore’s back, a play on The Substance, the body horror Best Picture contender.
Greatest upsets in the 97th Oscars Academy Awards
- Mikey Madison wins Best Actress over Demi Moore:
Mikey Madison winning the Best Actress award for her performance in Anora over Demi Moore in The Substance was arguably one of the greatest upsets. Moore was surmised to win since she already had a streak of major wins under her belt, including Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award. - Dominance of Anora in major categories:
Anora, a strip club Cinderella story, took home five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Sean Baker. Such would seem an upset, given strong nominations among films such as The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez. - Emilia Pérez fails to deliver: Although Emilia Pérez was nominated 13 times and was among the strongest contenders, it bagged only 2 wins. The film was plagued with controversies surrounding its lead actress, Karla Sofía Gascón, possibly hurting its chances.
- Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers gotten no nominations:
Shockingly, Luca Guadagnino’s film Challengers received no nominations, especially in light of the stature and past victories of Guadagnino. - Trent Reznor left out:
Unconventionally, his name was left out from nominations as he always makes major contributions with his film musical scores.
