Aamir Khan’s film Sitaare Zameen Par, which serves as a sequel to the beloved 2007 movie Taare Zameen Par, has been generating a lot of buzz. This marks Aamir Khan’s return to the big screen after the mixed reception of Laal Singh Chaddha, so expectations are understandably high.
Just yesterday, the film’s trailer was unveiled. While the initial feedback was quite positive, it didn’t take long for eagle-eyed internet users to spot frame-by-frame similarities between this film and the sports comedy-drama Champions, which is the English adaptation of the Spanish hit Campeones.

The storyline of Champions, available for streaming on Jio Hotstar, goes like this: “A disgraced coach mentors a team of intellectually disabled athletes, uncovering their hidden talents and transforming his own life.” This theme closely mirrors what we see in the trailer for Sitaare Zameen Par.
On Reddit, a thread has gone viral, showcasing a frame-by-frame comparison of the two trailers, and the trolling has taken off like wildfire.
Aamir Khan Faces Backlash For Posting About Operation Sindoor Hours Before Sitaare Zameen Par Trailer Launch
The much-anticipated trailer for Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par dropped on May 13. However, just hours before its release, Aamir Khan Productions took to X to share a post honoring the heroes of Operation Sindoor. This move didn’t sit well with many online, who accused Aamir of trying to steal the spotlight.
One user commented, “Kucha jada jaldi nahi kar di post? (Haven’t you posted too early)?”

Another chimed in, “We as Indians should just ignore these morons @AKPPL_Official @iamsrk, @BeingSalmanKhan, @saifalikhan067. They make their money here in India, but when times get tough, they want to act all intellectual. They might even be under the illusion of 72 virgins.”
Yet another comment read, “Dekho koi movie ka announcement bhi ata hoga… Ye paise k liye bolte h lekin dil m Turkey and Pakistan h.”
Another comment read, “Bahut jldi yaad aayi? Movie release ki date ko 10-20 saal aage bda do, fayde m rhoge. Wrna public itna pelegi k jaisi laal singh ki chaddi pili hue thi.”
Bollywood’s very own Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir Khan, has finally dropped the much-anticipated trailer for his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par. The film also features Genelia Deshmukh and introduces ten fresh faces to the industry.
This new project is a sequel to Aamir and Darsheel Safary’s beloved 2007 film, Taare Zameen Par. Just before the trailer’s release, Genelia’s husband, actor Riteish Deshmukh, praised it as ‘extraordinary’.
Fans echoed his sentiments when the trailer was released, showering Aamir with praise for his role as a quirky basketball coach. However, things took a turn when a clip went viral on social media, drawing comparisons between Sitaare Zameen Par and the 2018 Spanish film, Champions. This sparked a wave of trolling aimed at Aamir.
According to the Wikipedia page for Sitaare Zameen Par, the film is indeed based on the Spanish movie Champions, which was inspired by a basketball team made up of individuals with intellectual disabilities from Burjassot, Valencia.
The story has since been remade in Arabic, German, and English. Now, however, netizens are criticizing Aamir’s film for being a ‘frame by frame copy’ of the original. Some have suggested that the team could have chosen a sport more relatable to Indian audiences, like cricket or hockey, while others are drawing parallels to Aamir’s previous box office disappointment, Laal Singh Chaddha.
One netizen shared their thoughts, saying, “After the Forest Gump fiasco, he really should have steered clear of remakes or adaptations… yeh bhi pitegi lagta hai.” Meanwhile, a troll chimed in with, “Perfectionist in copying the film frame by frame.”
Another comment pointed out, “Everyone praises Aamir for his scripts, but honestly, every movie of his is a copy or a rip-off from somewhere.” A social media user added, “The issue I see with this movie is that it caters to a very niche audience who understands Basketball… They could have at least switched the sport to something like cricket, football, or hockey… Thoda relatable lagta.”
On the flip side, some fans stepped up to defend the film. One netizen remarked, “Official remake hai bhai toh of course usme konsi nayi baat hai,” while another argued, “You’re acting like everyone in India has seen Champions and that it’s a huge hit here. Honestly, no one cares if it’s a remake since most haven’t seen the original; what really matters is whether it’s a good film.”
