Glitch in UPI: For the past couple of hours, several users have reported issues with their UPI transactions in various states of India. Allegedly, customers were unable to process their payments on popular apps like Google Pay and Paytm, among others.

Glitch in UPI Payments in 2025
According to the independent outage monitor Downdetector, UPI payments have registered complaints of over 3,000 since around 6 pm.
As users share their stories about incomplete payments or unusual delays on social media, the major payment application came under fire even more. Many complained of inability to make payments to merchants, payment failure, or transactions kept pending for hours on end. There are reports of recipients’ side deduction without confirmation, and in some cases, payment initiation errors.”
“I was in a grocery shop, my UPI payment was failing for a long time. Tried Google, Paytm also, but nothing works,” Rajesh Sharma wrote on social media platform X.
Many customers went on to share similar complaints tagging their respective banks and payment platforms on X for urgent resolution.
There were 119 complaints regarding the Paytm app, and 376 users complained of outages on the SBI platform. Most complaints on SBI were about fund transfers and online banking services.
“First time in my life that I experienced a UPI outage. Not Banks, or gateways, but @UPI_NPCI itself btw, uptime was 100% in Feb,” an X user, posted on the social media platform.
Another user’s post on X crossed all limits in calling the UPI service, “What is this nonsense? UPI is not working. My money is debited but not credited to my friend’s account @UPI_NPCI.”
“Is there any problem with UPI right now? I tried payments through Google pay, PhonePe, Paytm, but the payments are getting failed,” shared another user.
UPI Transactions Crossed 16.99 Billion in 2025
UPI transactions in January surpassed 16.99 billion and the value exceeded ₹23.48 lakh crore, the highest ever recorded in a month, the Finance Ministry said on Thursday.
For 2023-24, the digital payments have shown tremendous growth, the finance ministry was quoted saying by PTI.
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) continues to be the backbone of India’s digital payment ecosystem, constituting 80% of retail payments within the country, a statement said.
People to Merchant (P2M) transactions for FY 24-25 (till Jan, 2025) contributed 62.35% and P2P transactions contributed 37.65% to the total UPI volume.

After Eating Customers Are Unable to Pay via UPI
Glitch in UPI Payments: One social media user on X posted a screenshot of a failed transaction on UPI and commented: Why the mf UPI is down ab ice cream kha li payment nahi ho raha kya karu.’
With a quick click, the most popular mode of payment has left many hanging, waiting to pay for something as little as an ice cream. Another commented, ‘UPI hi down ho gaya, 2 dost pani puri kha ke dukan pr khade hai 30 min se (UPI is down; two of my friends ate pani puri and are waiting at the shop since 30 minutes waiting to pay).”
Another user added to the majority of complaints: “UPI has been failing since the last 30 minutes servers are down.Utoday we will have to wash the dishes for this.”
Making a witty observation, another says, Is UPI down today at all the tapris outside and inside campus? Is it crash-the-Indian-economy moment? :p.”
In an optimistic note regarding the mishap that caused discomfort to many clients, another X user said, “upi down, millions of rupees saved across the nation.”
However, another very sarcastic but interesting tale goes that this should have certainly been the day of the great opportunity for some people to repay their debts to him: “UPI is down in case someone is paying me back today.”
DownDetector registered 2750 complaints regarding the UPI snag, as of 7:50 pm. UPI had Google Pay users making a total 296 complaints according to the site.
A social media user summed it all up with the words: “The UPI servers are down. Isi din ke lie gharwale bolte the cash rakha karo.” (This is why my family used to say, keep cash with you.)
