All the dead people were employees of the Indian restaurant, Haveli, located at Gudauri, on the border between Georgia and Russia.
Responding to the event the Indian Embassy in Georgia stated that it had only got information concerning death of the Indian nationals in Gudauri. Condolences to the families of those who died. Mission has always been in touch with the local authorities in order to get details of the Indian nationals who died. “All possible assistance will be given,” the embassy said on X.
According to Georgian Interior Ministry, four people died at the Indian restaurant’s second floor which is a resting area. 12 people from the same workplace were found dead.
Signs of bodily harm or violence are absent, it said, further stating that, “From preliminary information, a power generator was taken to the interior area, an enclosed space close to the bedrooms, where it was switched on, perhaps after the electricity supply was cut off, yesterday.”
Power generators are supposed to be used outside since this is hazardous devices that emit considerable amounts of carbon monoxide fumes.
In total, 12 people were fatalities, out of 11 foreign citizens and one Georgian citizen, according to the statement of the Interior Ministry of Georgia.
A factual post mortem examination shall in addition identify the specific cause of death.
The ministry said it was investigating the case under Article 116 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which means negligent homicide.
