Donald Trump Calls Putin : Trump spoke with Putin from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Thursday, just days after his stunning election victory over Democratic rival Kamala Harris, the report said.
The Washington Post reported Sunday that Trump has contacted Putin and called on him to refrain from worsening the situation in Ukraine.
Trump was on the line from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Thursday morning following his win against the Democratic contender Kamala Harris, the report added.
His representatives have not directly answer when they were asked by AFP for comment.
Quoting several unnamed sources whom it described as people familiar with the call, The Post said that Trump had assured Putin that America has a large military footprint in Europe.
Donald Trump Calls Putin to Stop Russia -Ukraine War
Putin and Trump said he also spoke of the desire to continue the conversation to “ Ukraine war soon” to solve.
When Donald Trump was elected, many saw potential in his approach to change the nearly three-year Ukrainian crisis, given the president’s desire to put an end to the war and question the support of billions of dollars for Ukraine from Washington.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had a phone call with Trump on Wednesday and Elon Musk, the billionaire funding the Republicans campaign was on the line.
In his words, the call was “excellent,” noting that Putin and the president will continue “frequent communication and deepen our partnership.”
The outgoing Democratic administration of President Joe Biden assured that it will deliver as much assistance to Kyiv as possible before Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
On Sunday, Biden’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the White House’s goal is “to get Ukraine in the best position on the battlefield in order to have talks and be in the best position at the table.”
Sullivan said this would include leveraging the $6 billion of funding for Ukraine still available.
The Russian government has given a cautious but mostly positive response to Trump’s return, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying Sunday: “The signals are positive… At least he is talking about peace, and not about confrontation.
When campaigning for the presidency Trump has promised to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict almost immediately – even before he is formally inaugurated as president but without outlining his reasoning.
While multiple lies have been cited by Trump and his allies about US funding to Ukraine, they have simultaneously alluded to the equally false notion that the aid supports a corrupt pro-war cooperation of defense firms and warmongering officials.
Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., shared a clip Saturday on Instagram which showed Zelensky standing next to the president-elect with a caption reading: ‘‘POV (point of view): You are now CNN, 38 days from losing your allowance.’
Any snap ceasefire in Ukraine is also likely to entail terms that would have Kyiv surrender territory it has lost to Russian aggressors in Ukraine ‘south and east’.
Another former Trump’s adviser, Bryan Lanza, told the BBC on Saturday that Ukraine had to abandon any goal of reclaiming Crimea, for example, which Russia annexed in 2014.
He said the US priority of was for ‘‘peace and to stop the killing’’ but this was quickly dismissed by the Trump transition team stating that the former was not a message from the president-elect.
Kyiv has strongly rejected any surrender of territory and although it currently requires more manpower than it can supply and is in doubt about future American support, its European partners Britain and France are not confident about one-man displays by Trump.
Earlier, Zelensky stated that the surrender of territories or the fulfillment of other Russian demands would only increase the activity of the Kremlin and continue the aggression, which is supported by many European partners.
The issue of land was only briefly mentioned, according to the Post, citing Trump’s conversation with Putin.
In the recent months, there have been seen some moves by both war parties(Russia-Ukraine) that could be interpreted as attempts to gain some upper hand before negotiations, where on one side Ukraine has captured a part of Russian occupied territory, and on the other side Russian troops have a push forward in Ukraine.
Both parties have upped the ante in drone attacks and this weekend was the most severe one yet.
In his address on Monday, Zelensky said that Russia launched 145 drones at Ukraine overnight while Russia stated that its forces had shot down 34 Ukrainian drones aiming at Moscow on Sunday.
