Chess World Champion in 2024: Indian sensation Gukesh of 18 years has attained the world chess champions title to make the record of the youngest world chess champions after defeating Chinese Dark-Eyed Ding Liren in the 14th and the last round played on Thursday. That is exactly what the final classical time control game of the 14 match games that tied 7.5-7.5 seemed to be, but Gukesh emerged the better player to bag the full point as Liren got only 0.5. He will receive a major part of the prize money which is USD 2.5 million because he is the winner of the title.
Who is the current World Chess Champion in 2024 ?
The usually low-profile teenager smiled broadly and brandished his arms triumphantly after the victory, very different from the generally impassive expression he dons during games.
Before Gukesh conquered the games on Thursday, the previous record youngest world champion was the Russian Garry Kasparov who became a champion by beating Anatoly Karpov in the year 1985 when he was only 22 years and something.
Gukesh had come into the match as the challenger ranked youngest ever after achieving the Candidates tournament this year.
He has become the second Indian after the Great Viswanathan Anand to slug the world title. Anand was the five time world champion who had last won the title in 2013 before losing to Magnus Carlsen.
Gukesh, the winner of the 14th game against Liren which took 4 hours and 58 moves, is the 18th world chess champion.
In short duration tie-breaks on Friday, winner of a three-fours match was to be determined in the event that the Thursday game too ended in a draw.
Gukesh was leading 3rd and 11th rounds while Liren clinched the 1st and 12th rounds before playing the decisive game on Thursday.
In the match all other games were drawn.
Gukesh D Reflects on the Chess Moment
After the game, in the interview, Gukesh talked about what was in front of him as an amazing chance. “This is something which every chess player would like to occur and I have the opportunity.” I will taste it and put my intent on it. Regardless of the result I will get, I will either like it or not, he said. His choice of words was quite mature and the match that was about to face focused him even more.
He then took time to pay tribute to another Indian chess master, Viswanathan Anand who was also celebrating his birthday. “Vishy Anand has been my idol and an inspiration to me and millions of other Chess players and I’m happy I had an opportunity for many of years to compete in the same class as he was competing in.” This level and such history has to be a dream come true for Gukesh when playing at the world championships.
