The world population has been boosting by leaps and bounds in the recent centuries in a way even not imagined. Although it was predicted that it will take hundreds of thousands of years to reach the 1 billion mark, the population swelled sevenfold of that amount within a span of 200 years.

The population of the world reached 7 billion by 2011 and the United Nations project this trend to rise further in the decades to come as it predicts an overpopulation of 8.6 billion people in the year 2030, 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100.

But geopolitical wars can end up shaking the population of a country due to refugees and the untimely death of people and so Ukraine has been labeled the fastest shrinking country of this world due to the war between Russia and Ukraine.

A sharp decline in population is being observed in Europe, where the region is the largest in the world with six of the ten largest nations in the globe, and some report that the population will reduce by 0.2 in 2023 compared to last year.

There are also the decreasing population and growing elderly populations coupled with the financial crisis in various parts of Greece, including that of the Greek of the 2010s which accelerated the same, making the population of about 10 million people lose 1 million people by 2050.

The situation in a small country of Oceania, Tuvalu, with a population of only 10,000 people second in the world in terms of a decrease in landmass as a result of a changing climate and a rise in ocean levels, will also be affected negatively due to mass emigration.

Quite the opposite, the continent of Asia is among the most populated regions, its overall rate of the growth being 0.6% in 2023, with such countries as India taking the leading positions and being the most inhabited in the world.

Top 10 countries witnessing the biggest decrease in population percentage between 2022—2023:

Depopulation is a decrease in the size of the population of any given country, town, or other regions of the land over some period.

Reduction of population may be as a result of a single or any combination of the numerous trends which may include aging, emigration, rates of birth (below the rate of replacement of the population), fertility rates (below the rate of replacement of the population), high mortality rates of infants as a result of inefficient health care systems, high rates of death related to war and attacks of violence, disease related or other disasters.

Population decline is beneficial as well as disadvantageous to some nation. A declining population has the effect that there were now more resources available to the population and wealth per capita might rise. Also, falling population reduces the ills of overpopulation in regions that are overpopulated including pollution, congestion in the road network, house values and rent, and environmental destruction.

Nevertheless, population decrease may as well result in an aging population and a smaller one- reducing in terms of highly-educated and high-skilled workers. Such shortages may lead to the decrease in the overall quality of life, state-funded programmes and GDP of the country.

This is because most countries in the world are experiencing declining population due to different demographic challenges affecting the world. The United Nations issues regular demographic estimations of indicators such as fertility, mortality and international migration.

These projections help business insider analysts and other media houses find out the top 20 countries that are likely to record the highest percentage population losses in the next 30 years (2020-2050). The largest region of population decrease in the whole world is evidently Eastern Europe as majority of countries in the region are experiencing high numbers of emigration of their population.

    RankCountryRegion% Decline (2022–2023)
    1UkraineEurope-8.10%
    2TuvaluOceania-1.80%
    3GreeceEurope-1.60%

    5KosovoLandlocked-1.00%
    6St. Vincent & the GrenadinesLatin America & Caribbean-0.70%
    7BelarusEurope-0.60%
    8Bosnia & HerzegovinaEurope-0.60%

To complete the list of ten, a look at Japan is the only Asian country that registered high population decline because of its high number of ageing adults, lower birth rates and marry at young age and have children at late age.

Note: because of outmigration and demographic shift. The sudden decrease of the population in Ukraine is greatly explained by refugees who left the country because of the war.
