Lunar Eclipse 2025: People throughout Asia can view the upcoming total lunar eclipse between September 7 and September 8 of 2025. North Americans will have an opportunity to witness their next total lunar eclipse during March 3–4, 2026.
Last night viewers of the night sky experienced the full Worm Moon’s incredible presentation by transforming into a deep reddish color while under a total lunar eclipse. The moon traveled through Earth’s enormous shadow throughout Thursday night transitioning into early Friday morning to produce a “blood moon”.
The other-worldly sight caused worldwide crowds to come out into the open and observe its eerie elegance. The shadow of the eclipse began at midnight ET before it fell over the moon over time.
According to Earth Sky the most striking part of the event occurred at totality when Earth covered the full moon for 1 hour and 6 minutes stretching from 2:26 a.m. ET to 3:32 a.m. ET. At 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time both the celestial show came to an end leaving everyone in wonder.
The first total lunar eclipse of 2025 proved to be the only presidential eclipse viewable from the Americas during the year. No other continent could fully experience the total lunar eclipse better than North and South America and people from western Europe, western Africa and New Zealand managed to witness a part of the awe-inspiring celestial show last seen in 2022.
Stargazers used their cameras on both city roofs and country cottages while they aimed to document the event. The spectacle revealed itself exactly as spectators anticipated.
Why does the moon turn red?
The Earth blocks sunlight to cause entire darkening of the lunar surface during a total lunar eclipse. Total darkness covers every part of the lunar surface during this period. The public can watch a lunar eclipse without eye protection as it remains safe for naked eye observation making it a prime astronomical viewing experience.
The deep red color of the moon can be attributed to what? During a total lunar eclipse sunlight refracts through Earth’s atmosphere as it passes through the shadow allowing only red hues to reach the moon and create its reddish appearance.
The atmosphere scatters blue and green wavelengths whereas the redder light waves successfully pass through to paint the moon red. The thousands of sunsets that project onto the moon during total solar eclipses create the appearance according to NASA’s description.

Viewers who missed the Blood Moon eclipse from last night need not feel disappointed since a new total lunar eclipse will appear this year. The September 7–8, 2025 full Corn Moon will appear red for a period of 82 minutes. During this eclipse viewers in Asia will have their best observations because viewers in Europe will only catch a brief glimpse as the moon rises.
The western parts of the United States along with Alaska and Hawaii will present the most optimal conditions for viewing the complete lunar eclipse that will take place in March 2026.
