Bangladesh authorities were demolishing the ancestral home of the renowned filmmaker, Satyajit Ray, in Dhaka, said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Tuesday. The property is hundred years old which is located at Horikishore Ray Chowdhury Road in Dhaka and the property belonged to the grandfather of Ray who was a famous litterateur by the name of Upendra Kishore Ray Chowdhury.
Addressing journalists, Banerjee referred to reports on local media outlets saying that demolition of the historical property has already been initiated.
Such news is very heartbreaking. One of the greatest carriers and carriers of Bengali culture is Ray family. Upendra Kishore can be called one of the pillars of the Bengal renaissance. So I feel that this house is part and parcel of the cultural history of Bengal, said the Chief Minister in a post on X.
She also made a request to the Mohammad Yunus government of Bangladesh as well as all the woke individuals of that country to do something to save this tradition-bearing home.” Banerjee also suggested the Indian government to take action in the issue.

The house of Upendra Kishore Ray Chowdhury, an important archaeological site was earlier converted into the Mymensingh Childrens Academy but had subsequently been lying in shambles over the years through lack of any maintenance by the government. Daily Star, a Bangladeshi news media stated, It is getting destroyed to form a new semi-concrete building.
The construction of the house, as stated by the Bangladesh archaeology Department, took place over century ago. The property fell under the government ownership following the 1947 partition.
It is an abandoned house that has been left empty 10 years ago. The Shishu Academy activities have been carrying out since a rented place, Md Mehedi Zaman, Children Affairs Officer, Dhaka told Daily Star.
To initiate academy activities, there will be a semi concrete building with couple of rooms and it is being planned and it will be done respecting necessary approvals, he said.
When asked why such a historically significant building was being demolished, the official said the building posed a serious risk for children, when they gather at the compound.
