Anita Anand is among the favorite to get the position of the Prime Minister of Canada in the forthcoming Canada next elections. If she wins she will be the one and only black and Indian woman who will have the chance to elect as a prime minister of Canada. This lady succeeded Justin Trudeau if her liberal party appoints her to that position.

Suggesting the eventual replacement for Justin Trudeau as the head of the Canadian state, Canadian politician Anita Anand serves as the Minister of Transport in Trudeau’s cabinet. On Monday, Trudeau called on his resignation to open the way for a new leader of the country.

On Monday, Justin Trudeau announced his resignation to enable a new PM to be elected before March 24. A favourite to take over from him is Anita Anand, the Minister of Transport and Internal Trade. Others being considered are Dominic LeBlanc, Chrystia Freeland, Melanie Joly, Francois-Philippe Champagne and Mark Carney.
Anita Anand is one of the representatives of the Liberal Party of Canada. She has been a member of parliament since 2019 and served in various important positions as Minister of Public Services and Procurement, Minister of National Defence and President of the Treasury Board. She has also been the Transport and Internal Trade Minister since 2024.
Coming from a middle class background with doctor parents Saroj D Ram and SV Anand who migrated to Canada from India in early 1960s Ms Anand and her family having strong ethics derived from their modest background which reflected in her professionalism while she was a student.
Anita Anand ’s parents are of Indian origin; she has two sisters, Gita and Sonia. Ms Anand arrived in Ontario in 1985 when she was 18, and enrolled for an academic program in political science.
She also undertook a course to finish her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Jurisprudence at Oxford University. After that, she took her bachelors in law in Dalhousie University and a masters degree in law in university of Toronto.
In the beginning of her professional career, several teaching positions were held by Ms Anand at the Yale Law School as well. While serving in the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto she occupied the JR Kimber Chair in investor protection and corporate governance.
She also served later as the Associate Dean of the University of Toronto, in addition to the Director of Policy and Research in the Capital Markets Institute, Rotman School of Management.
Anita Anand married in 1995 with John Knowlton, a Canadian lawyer and business executive when she was doing her post graduate degree in law at University of Toronto. They have four children.
It is known that they have lived in Oakville more than 21 years, though they were living there in different years, for example in 1997-1999 and then from 2005 till now. Since 2019, she has been serving as a member of parliament from Oakville, in the House of Commons.
The political journey of Anita Anand started when she contested for the seat from the Oakville region in 2019 for which she is the serving member of parliament in the region. During COVID-19 pandemic, she was serving as the Minister of Public Services and performing critically important duties.
She took an active part in securing an improved provision of Canadian’s medical equipment such as oxygen, masks and PPE kits, vaccines, and antigen tests. A noteworthy activity she performed within her cabinet was operating as the minister of public services; an area that won her the appreciation of the whole country.

Minister of National Defence role was assigned to her in 2021 as well as. Those fundamental changes to Canada’s military forces were made during his tenure, however, at the hands of Miss Macdonald. Though Kim Campbell of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada served as the first and only up to date woman PM of Canada in 1993, there seems to be no women PM from the Liberal Party. Should she be so chosen as the replacement of Justin Trudeau, Anita Anand will go down in the annals of the country’s historical records as the first woman of colour and the first Canadian of Indian origin to be elected as Prime Minister of the country.

Anand was born in Kentville, Nova Scotia; her parents are Saroj D. Ram – a doctor, and S.V. Anand, also a doctor. She has two sisters, Geeta and Sonia Anand. In her political career, Anand has been awarded for her efforts; notably when she was still the Defence Minister, she stood by Ukraine in the Russia Ukraine war as well as work on issues with the Canadian Armed Forces.
Anand’s appointment as the Transport Minister on December the 2024 albeit was during a controversy involving a cabinet reshuffle when she was moved from international Trade to the Treasury board saw her embrace a central role in Trudeau’s government. She is still one of the front runners to steer Canada to the next phase.
