In the wake of the release of the Justice Hema Committee report revealing rampant sexual misconduct in the Malayalam film industry, the entire 17-member executive committee of the Association of Malayalam Movies Artistes (AMMA), including AMMA president and superstar actor Mohanlal, resigned from their posts on Tuesday. The new members were elected in June 2024 with their Contract holding upto 2027.

In a statement to the media, the executive committee said: “Following the release of the Hema Committee report and the subsequent sexual allegations faced by certain office bearers within the executive committee of AMMA in social, visual, and print media, the current executive committee of AMMA, taking into consideration its moral responsibility, is stepping down.” As Reported the following by The Indian Express.
On Sunday, the controversy deepened as more accounts of harassment surfaced about Allegations against Malayalam industry, including a resurfaced allegation involving actor-politician Mukesh. The revelations have sent shockwaves through the Malayalam film industry, prompting high-profile resignations and public outcry and taking this allegations seriously chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan held a high-level meeting with senior police officials and announced the formation of a seven-member special team to investigate the atrocities and abuse faced by the women in this industry.
The statement said a general body meeting of the organization will be held in two months to elect a new governing body. Until then, the existing governing body will continue as an ad-hoc system to ensure distribution of various welfare measures to the members and co-ordinate office matters. They hoped for a new leadership that not only will strengthen but will lead well and said in the statement that thank you to everyone for correcting us.
“We hope that AMMA will get a new leadership to renew as well as strengthen it. Thanks to everyone, for criticizing and correcting,” the statement said further.
After the Hema Committee report came out, AMMA general secretary Siddique was forced to quit in the wake of sexual assault allegations against him. Baburaj was also facing The same allegations ad Siddique and was in the wake against him he also Did quit the AMMA.
Leading actor Prithviraj on Monday said, “There should have been strong interventions on the part of AMMA (on Allegations against Malayalam industry and its members)… Nobody can deny the existence of a power group in the industry (Hema committee had said a power group controls Malayalam cinema).” Reported By The Indian express.
AMMA began to crack soon after the Hema Committee report was released last week. Its vice president Jagadish demanded a probe and said perpetrators who exploited women in the industry should be exposed and hence the decision of dissolving The AMMA was taken as the allegations were turning serious.
He also told the media that the violence against women in film should not be branded as “stray incidents”. This comment came soon after Siddique, then the general secretary of AMMA, had said such “stray incidents” would ultimately lead to the demise of the industry and the said industry is under tight scrutiny from now on after Allegations against Malayalam industry.
