The Hindi comedy film franchise called ‘Housefull’ is very popular. The franchise now has four movies, and all of them received good reviews or bad, but each film ended up earning a great profit at the box office. As they hoped to match the success of the previous four films, the creators tried with Housefull 5.
The duo, Tarun Mansukhani and Sajid Nadiadwala, hired Akshay Kumar and many other actors for the franchise movie by making it loud and filled with comedy gags. Was the audience able to enjoy the jokes that the producer and director included? Can the fifth movie in the franchise make it to the top of the box-office charts?
What is Housefull 5 About?

Ranjeet Dobriyal (Ranjeet), a billionaire from London who owns a lavish Cruise, died in mysterious circumstances during his birthday trip on the cruise. Under Ranjeet Dobriyal’s will, his son, Jolly, will be given the job of running the company after the estate has successfully transferred all its assets to him. Yet, None of the board members has met Jolly personally.
It is only certain to them that Jolly will be on the cruise on Ranjeet’s birthday at 03:00 PM. Each in turns, Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh and Abhishek Bachchan, all saying they are Jolly, turn up to introduce themselves to the board of directors. Who should we consider to be the real Jolly? What led to the killing of Ranjeet Dobriyal? The rest of the story comes from here.
There is no denying that there is a clear boundary between ‘absurdist’ and ‘absurd,’ and it is definitely not very thin. Still, the creators of this mix of comedy and thriller (and the fifth Housefull movie) clearly cannot tell the difference between being ludicrous and being clever. This movie is mostly about expressing feelings instead of sharing ideas.
Housefull 5, written by Sajid Nadiadwala and shared duty with Tarun Mansukhani for scripting and directing, is set on a cruise ship and ends up in really rough seas without a lifeline.
With many scenes that wear out their gags, Housefull 5 goes from bad to worse without any improvement. Just like every time, the women shown here – Jacqueliene Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, Nargis Fakhri, Chitrangda Singh, and Soundarya Sharma – are used for the dance parts and briefly for any jokes.
The film starts with the murder of someone by a masked person on a cruise ship that is sailing to honor the 100th birthday of the UK’s seventh richest business tycoon. Even more murders happen, yet the killer’s identity does not become clear until British-Indian cops on suspension head to the ship to investigate and bring along the Interpol head, who happens to be a beedi-smoking Indian.
There is chaos everywhere and the film makes sure nothing makes sense in order to keep the story truly wacky. Although Housefull 5 is full of madness, the comedy often goes too far and ends up affecting its own cause.
This means that at least some true fans might not be very happy enjoying the actions of imposters, intruders, and detectives on a ship that never settles down.
Not just one, not only two, but three people show up claiming to be the rightful heir of Ranjeet Dobriyal’s (Ranjeet) inheritance and their wives all want that huge fortune.
Jolly(Riteish Deshmukh) is introduced with Zara (Sonam Bajwa) around, while Jalbhushan alias Jolly (Abhishek Bachchan) appears with Sasikala (Jacqueline Fernandez), and Julius alias Jolly (Akshay Kumar) is seen with Kaanchi (Nargis Fakhri).
Maya (Chitrangda Singh), Bedi (Dino Morea), Dev (Fardeen Khan), the magnate’s son from his second wife, and Shiraz (Shreyas Talpade) keep growing confused and impatient as they welcome the guests.
When more murders happen and the intruders are everywhere, no one is safe from being suspected. Furthermore, with everything getting stranger, crazier, and more ridiculous, the film totally loses its track, and viewers get plenty of laughs seeing all the funny antics.
All the craziness occurring in these films might seem absurd sometimes, but it usually isn’t hard to see why the jokes keep appealing enough for viewers.
If the scenes on the screen don’t appeal to you, try watching for the many tired references Housefull 5 keeps making to its own earlier movies as well as to the popular themes revolving around Hindi movies and their stars now.

Like in the original Housefull, Akshay’s character keeps getting into complications caused by monkeys and, strangely enough, by a macaw, which only played a minor role in Housefull 4—a film most critics would not recommend—that gained decent box office returns.
Boman Irani is not seen in Housefull 5, but his character Batuk Patel remains important, as Johny Lever takes over the role as the shipping boat’s chatting and lenient officer. Dheer acts as the tough captain of the ship and a hint is given to the audience to connect with his Chennai Express role, Thangabali.
Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff play their characters as Bhiddu and Baba. The crazy cops reach the ship to pursue the killer and catch him. The soundtrack always includes the instrumental version of Nayak nahin khalnayak hoon main whenever Dutt’s character is shown.
At a certain time, the movie replaces khalnayak with nalayak, and that’s easily the word that comes to mind while dealing with the film’s poor, unfunny jokes.
Next, as the head of Interpol, Nana Patekar is allowed to truly represent his Marathi character with the series of dances playing all through his scenes.
After establishing himself as someone with enough knowledge to be dangerous, yet lacking some major details, he begins to teach all the passengers the moves specific to that folk dance. Everyone gathers and looks like they are enjoying themselves. But what happens to the people who have paid to witness this pointless entertainment?

Had the script for Housefull 5 not been overflowing with utter rubbish, it might have seemed like a natural adventure instead of a crazy party. We certainly never agreed to get swept into this mess.
Housefull 5 is a sorry example of comedy, partly because the plot falls flat.
This movie first appeared in theaters 15 years ago. It is very clear that the characters are rusted, and the script calls for a new interpretation. The ideas in the movie have gone stale, and so has the humor motivated by Ranjeet’s naughty movements.
Since frat boys are not included this time, the dialogues written by Farhad Samji leave Riteish Deshmukh and Akshay Kumar to look for moments of comedy. With their talent in slapstick, Akshay and Riteish are not affected by the weak points in the plot. With Fardeen Khan in the ring, Abhishek Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt find it very tough to be better than him in an acting challenge. Although Shreyas Talpade and Johnny Lever show us how to use stereotypes in their roles, we don’t get to see much of them in the film.

Most of the time, Tarun tries to show how well Jackie Shroff and Dutt work together, but it lacks magic on screen. Even Nana Patekar’s arrival late into the movie cannot improve the dull storyline.
Once again, the film is packed with glamour and a dash of unclear sexual jokes. The humor falls flat instead of working. Nargis Fakhri and Jacqueline Fernandez don’t often bring anything new to the big screen. She joins the league these actors are part of here. It looks like leading ladies are chosen for big films since their dates do not conflict with other well-known male stars. Even though Chitrangada Singh and Sonam Bajwa are good actors, this is about loud laughter, squealing, and dancing in glamorous garments.
The movie Housefull 5 is being shown in movie theatres now.
