Norway: The world eagerly followed the match between youthful chess prodigy D. Gukesh and renowned champion Magnus Carlsen, knowing it would make a big impact on chess. Sunday at the Norway Chess 2025 tournament, Gukesh earned a sensational victory by beating Carlsen in the classical format, the first time he had defeated the world No. 1 in a classical chess game. Most of the game, playing with the white pieces, Carlsen benefited from his strong positional advantage. Nevertheless, the young Gukesh reacted with a cool composure and precise moves.
As the match’s time limits got tighter, Carlsen slipped and Gukesh used the chance to win quickly.
There was very little I could do at that time. After the match, Gukesh said: “I had to make the most of the situation.”

“My tricks were hard for him which made him run out of time.” One lesson I got here is that scrambling is easier said than done.”
He also said in a modest way: “It only makes sense that I would have lost 99 out of 100 times.” It seems just a lucky day.”
Looking very annoyed, Carlsen threw the chessboard away and quickly left the tourney. Gukesh and his coach Grzegorz Gajewski simply enjoyed the win in private, making it a moment he would never forget.
The rivals faced off in the starting round and Carlsen secured the win with his special skill in the endgame. It was Gukesh this time who did not waver when the outcome was at stake.
Norway Chess is seen as one of the leading chess events, inviting both male and female top players to play with a unique double round-robin format. Between May 26 and June 6, the 2025 edition will happen in Stavanger.
D Gukesh’s Win Over Magnus Carlsen Pivotal Moment For Indian Chess” Says Assam’s Chief Minister

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed on Monday that the win of D Gukesh over Magnus Carlsen was a momentous step for Indian chess. We are thrilled by your achievements @DGukesh! Watching you beat Magnus Carlson at @NorwayChess was just amazing, it was incredibly valuable! This is a very important turning point for Indian chess. Congratulations to Gukesh,” wrote Carlsen on X. He was well placed during most of the match, but a single slip during time trouble gave Gukesh the chance to win.
Gukesh Breaks Silence On Magnus Carlsen’s Post-Loss Outburst: “Also Banged…”
India’s chess champion D Gukesh told Chess.com that he wasn’t happy with beating former world number one Magnus Carlsen and reacted calmly to Carlsen’s angry reaction after the game, where Carlsen banged the table and dropped some pieces.
This victory by Gukesh in the classical category was his first over Magnus Carlsen. At 19, the player made history by being the second Indian to be victorious over Carlsen in chess.
Speaking right after the match, Gukesh said on Chess.com, “Okay, I will take it.”
Mr. Kasparov approached Carlsen’s angry response in good spirit, realizing that everyone has such moments and says, “I have been very frustrated in my career also.”

On the official X account of Norway Chess, you can now see the video of Carlsen reacting after the match was over: he cheered, then banged the table and upset some chess pieces. Even as he gave Gukesh a pat on his back and shook his hand, Carlsen seemed displeased with his game at the end of the match.
After his victory and the epic come-from-behind win, Gukesh commented that “99 times out of 100 I would have lost, but it just happened to be my lucky day.”
Most of the game, Carlsen was confident and ahead, but he became nervous and allowed Gukesh to come out on top in the end. After winning, D Gukesh climbed to third place in the Norway Chess 2025 points standings with 8.5 points and only one point separates him from the first two leaders, Carlsen and Caruana.
On May 27, as Round One at Norway Chess began, Magnus Carlsen gave a thrilling performance to dominate reigning World Champion D Gukesh. Since Gukesh won the world title, it was their first classical match and this game also marked Carlsen’s comeback to classical chess after a gap of nearly a year.
It was because of Gukesh’s resilience and clear thinking that he was able to create a chance to draw, despite being under severe pressure, said Gukesh’s coach, GM Vishnu Prasanna. I don’t believe he was expecting that result, but I’m quite certain he is pleased,” states Vishnu Prasanna.
