COVID-19: On Friday, the Delhi government advised hospitals in the city to make sure beds, oxygen, needed medicines and vaccines were all available.
Friday’s update from Delhi health minister Pankaj Singh confirmed 23 recent Covid infections and he added that officials are working to find out if the patients have been in the city or have a travel background.
This message came as cases have gone up in China, Thailand and Singapore in recent weeks.
Hospitals across the city have been told to send all results that test positive for Covid-19 to Lok Nayak Hospital for sequencing.

Hospitals should make sure they have beds, oxygen, antibiotics, other drugs and vaccines available to prepare for the fight against COVID-19. Bi-PAP devices, ventilators, oxygen concentrators and PSA should be fully working for the hospitals, the ministry said.
According to the health department, each day’s parameter data should be posted on the Delhi state health data management Portal as well.
Statistics in India about Covid infections
Several places in India have recorded low-level infections. Wednesday saw a total of 257 new cases reported by the Union health ministry.
Maharashtra had 56 new Covid cases and Tamil Nadu logged 66. In addition, doctors found infections in Puducherry, Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Haryana, Karnataka and West Bengal.
On Friday, Kerala’s health minister Veena George confirmed there were 273 new COVID-19 cases in May. Kottayam had the highest count, with 82 recorded cases, the minister said, while Thiruvananthapuram had 73 and Ernakulam had 49.
Friday saw four people in Haryana test positive for Covid and they have been given medical care while under observation at home. Rao advised that people should not worry because the state government is observing the situation at all times.
On May 19, officials from the National Centre for Disease Control, the Emergency Medical Relief division, the Disaster Management Cell, the Indian Council of Medical Research and central government hospitals had a meeting led by the director general of health services to review the latest rise in Covid-19 infections.
It was concluded at the meeting that India’s current Covid-19 cases are under control. By May 19, 2025, the country of India had just 257 active cases of Covid-19 which is very low compared to its population. Most of the cases are not severe and there’s no need for hospitalization, added PTI.
According to Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, 23 COVID cases were reported in Delhi yesterday. The Delhi government is investigating if the cases involve people from the city or are imported from elsewhere. We have already worked with all medical superintendents, doctors and their teams in getting ready. The government in Delhi has all necessary measures ready and no one should be concerned…
The city of Mumbai now stands out, as it saw 95 COVID-19 cases during May. About ten percent of the state’s total 132 cases from January comes from that area. Currently, totaling 16 hospitalised patients in Mumbai have officials transferring a few from the KEM Hospital to the nearby Seven Hills Hospital to prevent further spread. Even though there was only one infection reported in May in Pune, the city has set aside 50 beds at Naidu Hospital to be ready.
New COVID-19 cases in Pune, Haryana and Tamil Nadu
Recent events in Haryana have reported three more cases which has caused officials in Gurugram and Faridabad to heighten their alert. A woman in Gurugram, who returned from Mumbai at 31 and a man, living in the area and with no history of travel, have both been confirmed positive and are now in isolation. Faridabad diagnosed a positive case of coronavirus in a 28-year-old security guard, who has since been admitted for treatment in the hospital in Delhi.
In addition, although Pune recorded just one COVID-19 infection last month (in an 87-year-old who recovered), it is erring on the side of caution. 50 beds at Naidu Hospital have been set aside by the Pune Municipal Corporation ahead of the event. Dr. Nita Borade, the top health official in Pune, said that giving COVID tests at the city’s civic hospitals is paused while central government guidelines are under review.

Cases in Tamil Nadu are increasing and there are 12 new infections in Puducherry and a concerning rise in Chennai. Dr. In the last two weeks, most of the viral cases, about 60 percent, involved influenza A or B, said Swaminathan, a Gleneagles Healthcity infectious diseases specialist. Now, everything is focused on Covid-19.”
Because of the rise, several hospitals have paused at-risk surgeries such as transplants and heart operations. Dr. T S Selvavinayagam advised people to remain careful in crowded places, but calmed locals by pointing out that COVID-19 flares up as usual during certain seasons.
What has led to these increases in COVID-19 positive cases?
Two new subvariants, OF.7 and NB.1.8 which are related to the JN.1 strain of Omicron, are believed to be the main reason for this rise. The main reason for concern about JN.1 is that its subvariants which are also under study, are known to transmit more easily.
Health professionals explain that cases are rising due to a combination of factors: the variants can be more easily spread, immunity in the general population has weakened, old varieties of the vaccine are not as effective, people are moving around more and public use of preventive practices has declined. Officials advise people to be vigilant and practice good COVID-19 behaviour whenever crowds are present.
