On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump stated he would double the planned tariffs on Canadian aluminium and steel in retaliation for Ontario’s decision to impose an electricity surcharge on three US states.
Trump stated in the social media post on Truth Social that the tariff increase would go into effect on March 12.
“I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD,” Trump posted.
The US president also asked Canada to “immediately drop” their “anti-american farmer tariff” of “250% to 390%” on various US dairy products, adding that they have long been considered outrageous.

“I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the US to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada,” Trump wrote.
The US president further warned: “If other egregious, long-time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada.”
Earlier today, Trump was calling Canada “tariff abuser” after the province of Ontario had imposed an electricity surcharge on three US states. He claimed, “My country does not need Canadian energy.”
Ontario’s tariff move
Donald Trump’s announcement comes after the province of Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, announced an increase in the tariff on electricity exports for almost 1.5 million American consumers living in Minnesota, New York, and Michigan by 25%. The new rates will take effect on Monday.
“I will not hesitate to increase this charge. If the United States escalates, I will not hesitate to shut the electricity off completely,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford had said.
I say it does not please me to do this. I feel terrible for the American people who did not start this trade war; one man is responsible, and that is President Trump.”
According to AFP, Trump has made a number of comments about annexing Canada, while simultaneously bringing all of Canada’s trade on which it lives in chaos with tariffs in one direction or the other since his inauguration.
Donald Trump’s huge threat to Canada on cars: ‘From April 2 business will shut…’
Unless Canada removes what he claims are “abusive” tariffs on US goods, President Donald Trump threatened on Tuesday to impose high tariffs on Canadian cars next month, which would “permanently shut down” Canadian automobile manufacturing.

“If other egregious long-time Tariffs are not in like manner dropped by Canada, I will massively increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S., which will essentially be the shutting down of the automobile manufacturing business in Canada on a permanent basis,” Trump warned.

In an alarm to Truth Social, the Republican leader claimed he would counter double the tariffs on Canadian aluminium and steel because Ontario slapped an electricity surcharge on three US states.
An increase in tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada by 25 per cent will make all-in-all 50 per cent on those products for their neighbour.
Importantly, March 12 is the date for the increase in tariffs.
According to industry consultant EY-Parthenon, Canada provides the United States with half of its aluminium imports and 20 per cent of its steel imports.
The looming tariffs, which currently allow for no exceptions, threaten to hit everything from electronics to vehicles and construction equipment.
President Trump on Canada’s Proposal for the 51st State
In a tariff announcement today, he again raised the idea of Canada being the 51st state in the United States where it asked the question why the country pays so little for national security.
Besides this long diatribe on social media, Trump also said that the only thing that makes sense is for Canada to come in as a 51st state of the United States.
“All tariffs and everything else will just go away. Further, Canadians taxes would be very substantially reduced, and they would be more secure, both militarily and otherwise, than they have ever been. There will not be a Northern Border problem anymore,” Trump said.
