In Brazil’s capital of São Paulo, undercover policemen apprehended a suspected thief during the Carnival festivities, showing off their superhero prowess in full Power Ranger costumes. The arrest took place near Ibirapuera Park, with the officers looking to blend into the crowd for their costume gala.
When the suspect was tackled to the ground, the nearby spectators erupted, chanting, “Power Rangers, Power Rangers!” and recording the surreal moment on their smartphones. To top it off, this weird deed instantly took the internet by storm, with netizens marveling at the unexpected combination of crime-fighting and cosplay.

According to Sao Paulo’s Governor Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, only several minutes later, they also managed to nab the guy with seven stolen mobile phones. Sharing the moment on X, he paid homage to the famed 90s superhero team.
“IT’S TIME TO MORPH! Our Civil Police Power Rangers are putting on another show this Carnival! Always alert, during this block our heroes noticed the suspicious behavior of a duo and with an approach that no ranger would find fault with, arrested the criminal and recovered seven cell phones at once. He is part of a gang identified from this arrest that resulted in searches at the criminals’ lodging and recovery of four more stolen devices and R$15 thousand cash. GO GO POWER RANGERS!” reads his post.
In a video shared by the governor, officers dressed in body-hugging Lycra costumes of red, blue, yellow, and green blend into the carnival crowds while paying homage to the TV show. One officer dressed as the black Power Ranger displays a handful of recovered phones for the camera.
The video went viral and netizens took to the comments to air their opinions. Some wrote, “I found this idea very creative. Congratulations to the São Paulo Police.” Another comment read, “This is what we expect from the state governor. Congratulations!!”
A third said, “Power Rangers could recover the water here in Campo Limpo, Capão, and the region. 3 weeks with (literally) an empty water tank.”
In other cases, cops across the world have gotten creative. In Lima, Peru, an officer took his undercover work to a new level: he dressed up as a capybara during a drug bust on Valentine’s Day. The operation seized 1,700 parcels of cocaine and marijuana.
Peruvian police are not new to disguises-they’ve also done a raid clad as Marvel superheroes such as Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor, and Black Widow.
