World’s Biggest Indian Diaspora: Yet, people have always been moving from one place to another, and, nowadays, an unprecedented number of persons live in the country which is not their own.
According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) there are currently 281 million international migrants; this is about 3.5 percent of the world’s population, it was 2.5 percent in year 2000.
With its population now counting up to about 1.4286 billion ( 142.86 crore) as estimated by United Nations population fund in 2023 , India trails other most populous nations in the world but outranks them in emigration, as there is a massive population of India-born persons all over the world.
It also revealed that out of about 272 million international migrants, India is home to the highest number of migrants intending to settle in other countries; reaching almost 18 million as stated in the UN World Migration Report 2024.hplace.
India, which has recently surpassed China to become the world’s most populous country, with an estimated population reaching 1.4286 billion (or 142.86 crores) according to the UNFPA 2023, leads the world in emigration—having a massive Indian diaspora across the globe.
In a notable mention, India is the origin of the largest number of international migrants in the world, touching nearly 18 million, according to the UN World Migration Report 2024.
As per India’s Ministry of Foreign affairs the total Indian emigrant population across the globe by may 2024 is estimated to be 35. 42 million, out of which 15. 85 million are Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and remaining 19. 57 million are people of Indian origin (PIOs).
