A Thai woman said she has been suffering from severe burning sensations for almost 19 years after a suture needle was left inside her private part after childbirth, as SCMP reported. The 36-year-old woman from the Cho Airong district in the Narathiwat province has complained of stomach pain ever since but failed to seek proper medical care. She went to the village headman, Aruman Waenogi earlier this month before seeking help from a non-governmental organisation (NGO) called Pavena Foundation for Children and Woman.
The NGO focusing on helping such victims as abuse, rape, harassment and human trafficking noted it and began making arrangements with the Narathiwat Provincial Public Health Office.
The NGO reported that 18 years ago, the nurse inserted a needle in the vagina of the victim as she was taking stitches. I watched the doctor try to remove it with his fingers, but he could not get hold of it. Due to concern over more bleeding, the doctor decided to suturer the wound and left the needle in. It took the woman 2023 to develop some severe discomfort and seek an X-ray through a government hospital where she found the needle.
No surgery yet
At that last update, the woman did not have any official surgery yet, but she needs to go for check-ups four times a month at the hospital. Still now the young woman has to travel the hospital about 3-4 times a month. While she uses the gold card for treatment, other expenses are travel expenses,” The NGO said.
This pain was left for years, the Foundation of Pavena states that the woman’s quality of life was disrupted and thus she had to endure more than a decade to get help.
Last year, an X-ray confirmed her worst fears: the needle was still in her vagina. She was then took to a local hospital where doctors recommended surgery in the Songkhla province to have it removed. However, the surgery has been halted severally because the needle moves around, making the surgical plan unfeasible.
Meanwhile, she continued to be a regular attendee of hospitals; even going for check-ups at least 4 times within a month. Such decentralized close associations have not only placed physical and emotional pressure on her, but her purse has also felt the pinch and the process has turned into an onerous experience that entered its nineteenth year a few months back.
This was claimed on the foundation’s website last week as The Independent reported, “Her family is poor, so she asked Pavena to help.”
The head of the Pavena Foundation Pawina Hongsakul immediately reacted when she heard about the state of the woman. She contacted a public hospital and went for an appointment to ensure she received correct treatment.
In order to relieve her continued visits, Hongsakul also consulted with the department of social development and human security in the province to secure the transportation so that the tireless and expensive ordeal that the woman has been suffering during her lengthy state of medical affliction, could be lessened.
Finally, the NGO has called the local security office to organize the hospital visits and reassured they will keep following up her case. There are also questions about whether she will sue the hospital and doctor that left the needle inside of her which has resulted in Constitutional problems for her entire life.
Information about when it is possible to remove a needle and what length of medical treatment my girlfriend will need was not mentioned.
The countermeasure of the hospital to the occurrence and any legal redress for damages in the future are unspecified.
It is qualm that the severity of the online backlash has led to many people criticize the doctor for his/her failure to take responsibility.
One online observer commented: This one, she should sue the doctor to the fullest! They should pay her back for 18 years of pain.”
Another added: Punctuality is important in each activity as well as focusing on trivialities. This careless doctor should pay the price and reckless doctors must be dealt with!
Another concerned a third one was, “What about her husband?”
