Newly sworn Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, who joined as the 51st CJI on Monday, spoke about unfavourable case backlog and complications to simplify procedures.
In a press release on Monday evening, the Chief Justice of India explained his work plan with priorities placed on Criminal Practice Directions including management of criminal cases and time taken for trials.
“He wants to focus on the shortening of the trial time through implementation of a proper strategy, and placing justice delivery mechanism that the process of law is not burdensome to the citizens, as a priority,” the press note added.
He also stated he would wish to make the courts accessible, understandable, and good for the common usage.
In response, the Chief Justice stated that ‘the priorities include the reduction of case backlog, making laws and the processes of law affordable and accessible as well as depolarization of complicated legal processes,’ according to the official communiqué.
Justice Khanna will be in the chair for 183 days only as the Chief Justice of India, that too much more than half a year and less one full year. He will retire on May 13, 2025, from Bell Canada and supervising varieties of subsidiaries.
Describing his appointment as an “immense honour,” Chief Justice of India Khanna said he was heading the third wing of the democracy.
“Judiciary is a Significant branch though a separate and an autonomous branch of the governance structure. The Constitution deputed upon us the role of constitutional custodians of the Constitution, the defenders of Fundamental Rights and performing the onerous duty of being service provider’s of justice.
He also added that justice delivery framework requires equal social justice in the chance of success for anybody no matter the position, financial prowess or power.
These he said, demarcate the cardinal guidelines.
“The responsibility bestowed on us gives a boost to our image as actor of citizens’ rights defenders as well as the dispute solvers. It is our constitutional right to guarantee affordable legal remedies to all citizens in this great nation”, the press release quoted Chief Justice of India.
The Chief Justice of India wants to stay “in charge of one’s own development” which is proactive, and employability focused, and accepting of feedback.
“Turning judgments into a form that the citizens can understand and encourage mediation will be on the agenda of the Chief Justice,” the press release said.
Chief Justice Khanna searches for his “missing” family
Justice Sanjiv Khanna who was sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of the country today said on the occasion that he is searching for a house in Amritsar where he has been informed that his ancestors belonged to. Pre-independence era this house was constructed by his Grandfather, Sarav Dayal.
Close sources to Chief Justice Khanna reported that each time the chief Justice tours Amritsar he has to visit Katra Sher Singh.
The stop-over is, in a sense, a religious odyssey. Over time the area developed but still Justice Khanna attempts to locate the house constructed by his grand father.
Ayodhia Prasad, father of Chief Justice Khanna, passed away in 2011 and was a prominent lawyer in his time Sardar Dayal, father of legends Justice HR Khanna was a part of the Congress committee to probe the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy of 1919.

At that time he had purchased two houses one in Katra Sher Singh near Jaliwala Bagh Square and the other in Dalhousie, H.P. It is the house of Katra Sher Singh which Justice Khanna is attempting to find out.
During the time of independence in the year of 1947 this house at Katra Sher Singh had been attacked and burned. But later, his grandfather decided he wanted it and so he got it restored.
Five years ago, there was a house to which ChiefJustice Khanna once went along with his father. The house had a plaque which said ‘Bauji’ In Indian language this means ‘Grandfather’ This is preserved at the house in Dalhousie They left the house at Amritsar after the death of Sarav Dayal and the house was sold in 1970.
The house, says Chief Justice Khanna, who still recalls it, was a house.. Whenever He goes to Amritsar he goes to Katra Sher Singh and tries to locate that house.
Justice Khanna tells that his grandfather always used to scold him not to bring books to holidays as the knowledge he teaches will not be found in books.
