One of India’s largest matrimonial service providers BharatMatrimony is currently facing a huge scandal as it is awash with a photo of a married woman masquerading as a single woman on the premium service that requires a subscription fee. One female, Swati Mukund, complained about the platform on Instagram, using the hashtag #BharatMatrimonyScam.

Subsequently, in a viral video post on Instagram, Ms Mukund went on to say she did not meet her husband through a matrimonial app and firmly advised people to be cautious when using the platform.

“More acrimony than matrimony, I guess!” she captioned the clip.
Ms Mukund who has more than two lakh followers said she restricted her husband for the first part of the video so that the app does not use her picture to misled people claiming that they met through BharatMatrimony.

The video starts with Ms Mukund responding to it as she says, “So this is a post on India’s number 1 and most trusted according to them matrimonial app BharatMatrimony.” A shot of the app is in the video; her photo is shown along with the inscription “BharatMatrimony Scam.”

As you can observe the picture used is of mine and to clarify I have a husband and this is him. “No, I was not able to locate him in any of those applications,” she said.

She was surprised that her pictures were used in the paid section of the service, the part that tells the customers that the profiles it provides are handpicked for the clients who pay for the app’s service.

“What really appalled me is the fact that this is BharatMatrimony’s elite subscription service in which they are charging people pots of money and they are actually assuring people they are filtering profiles so that their users can find appropriate life partners,” Ms Mukund said.

Still others have posted personal ads about it in the matrimonial website.

A user said, “I have also used their elite matrimony paying 1.5 lakhs … it’s the biggest scam. They offer you the same girls repeatedly and you have to pay for one year.”

Another wrote to ‘Sue them big time.”

One said, “It is a proved fact that most matrimonial sites have lady’s profile of married woman.Even I have reported many.”

“You have raised awareness of this issue for which people complain are rampant in dating & matrimony apps,” the comment went on.

They say Ms Mukund called upon users of the platform to exercise caution while dealing with the profiles found on the platform. “This is a beacon to all the users of this platform to ensure that before you use any of these apps, ensure that you are cautious because as you have seen, not everything that is depicted is as it is,”she cautioned.

The comment section of the post was filled with comments as the users shared their experience using the matrimonial apps.

“Same here. There are several fake elite gold-verified profiles people with my pictures used. I decided to get in touch with their very responsive executive shortly. A user also pointed out that their algorithm currently recognizes when flagged pics are used “but they got a loophole by which my pics were used The verifications include name, dob, and other details from Aadhar cards and other government documents But now they need to figure out how to verify and flag pictures used.”

Another user said it one year of usage and observed that the profile listed were fake and suspicious. They do no screening onboard. The listed users don’t reply and when we raise concerns about customer support they just say sorry for the inconvenience.”

If you don’t mind, I wish to share this post to others to make them aware. This is very sad and shocking. What if one never realised their picture is used for these purposes,” one of the users.
