    Maggie Smith was an distinguished Oscar-winning actress whose roles ranged from Shakespeare to Harry Potter and many more.

    There are only a few actors who have made their names in revue, Maggie Smith’s definitive performances in Shakespeare and California Suite has given her two Oscars and countless theater awards for her acting. She remained as a certified box-office star for more than 60 years in the industry. And then while there is only a few exceptionally talented as Maggie Smith, she died at the age of 89.

    Maggie Smith was known as a performer whose range encompassed the high style of Restoration comedy and the sadder, suburban creations of Alan Bennett. No matter what role she played, she did it so amusingly , often corrosive with an edge of humor. She was infallible because of her instinct for the correct gesture and her comedy was fuelled by anxiety.

    Maggie Smith’s first Oscar came for an iconic performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1969. Her pre-eminence became truly global with two projects towards the end of her career. Maggie Smith played the role of professor Minerva Mcgonagall in the eight films of the Harry Potter franchise from 2001 to 2011. From 2010 – 2015, she played the formidable and acid-tongued Dowager Countess of Grantham,Lady Violet in the six series of Downton Abbey on ITV which was sold to 250 territories all over the world. She acted as a woman whose heart is seeming to be a stone was mitigated by a moral humanity and an old-fashioned, if sometimes overzealous, sense of social propriety.

    In the early time of her career, Maggie Smith was described as having witty elbows by one critic. Also Harold Clurman the US director and writer said that she “thinks funny”. When she was casted as Rosalind in As You Like It in 1977 in Stratford, Ontario which was directed by Robin Phillips, the director said that “she can respond to something that perhaps only squirrels would sense in the air. And I think that comedy, traveling around in the atmosphere, finds her.” Like  her great predecessor stylist Edith Evans, she came late to Rosalind. Bernard Levin was convinced that her performance was a definitive performance, he was deeply affected by the last speech. 

    Maggie Smith won her second Oscar for the best supporting actress in “California Suite” in 1978 which was based on Neil Simon’s stage comedy. When she attends the Oscar as a British Actress with her bisexual husband (Michael Caine), has a disappointing evening at the ceremony and a bittersweet night in bed.

    In her life prizes and awards had begun coming her way in the 1950s when she was only 20. At that age she won her first Evening Standard Theater Award. At the time of Millennium, she already got dozens of awards in her name. She has two Oscars, a Tony, two Golden Globes, half a dozen BAFTAs (British Academy of Film and Television Awards) and scores of nominations. Yet she could go almost anywhere unrecognized.

    Maggie Smith was born on 28th December of 1934 in the Ilford neighborhood of London, England. She was born in a family who valued education and creativity. Her father was a teacher and her mother was a homemaker, instilled in her a love for the arts from a young age. Throughout her life, she has been in an environment that fostered her passion for acting.

    In 1967, she married Robert Stephens who is an actor and a director. She had her two children with him. They are, Chrs Larkin and Toby Stephens. Although their marriage ended in divorce in 1975, both of those children have pursued careers in the creative field which is a reflection of their mother’s artistic legacy. Today, her both sons are known among the most recognized British actors.

    Her family played a crucial role in her life by supporting her career and her with a sense of balance when she had an intense professional trajectory. Over the past years, she has maintained a close relationship with her children. Who has been her greatest source of pride and joy.
