What is Delhi liquor scam?
November 2021 New liquor policy was implemented by the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi.
Earlier, there were a total of 864 liquor shops in Delhi, of which 475 were government shops.
But in essence the government has completely lost its business which means that the government has handed over all the liquor shops to the private hands and none of the shops are now government owned.
Before the new policy was introduced, liquor traders used to get a retail margin of Rs 33.35 per bottle of 750 ml, But after the implementation of the new policy, that retail margin increased to 363.27.
On the other hand, under the old policy, earlier a bottle was available at Rs 530, but after the implementation of the new policy, it started selling at Rs 560.
Due to this, the businessmen have earned huge amounts but on the other hand, due to the excise duty imposed on the sale of liquor, the government’s income will decrease very rapidly.
Earlier Delhi government charged excise duty of Rs 223.89 per bottle of Rs 530 but after the new policy the government increased the wholesale price per bottle by 1%.
The present Chief Secretary of Delhi complained to LG
Therefore, liquor traders had to pay only Rs 1.88 excise duty on a bottle of Ras 530, while people were charged Rs 30 per bottle. On July 8, 2022, the then Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar sent a report to governor VK Saxena.
In this report, Minister Manish Sisodia has been accused of making wrong policies.Chief Secretary has estimated a loss of Rs 580 crore to the government treasury due to Excise Policy 2021-22.
LG had demanded a CBI inquiry on this report.CBI had registered a case on this on 17 August 2022.Under this case, three former government officials including Manish Sisodia, nine businessmen and two companies have been accused.
It is believed that the money in the scam was also embezzled, hence ED is also involved in it.After registering the case, CBI and ED jointly raided and started arrests.
After complete investigation, ED and CBI together prepared their own separate investigation seats. ED and CBI have alleged in their discussion that due to the excise policy of 2021-22, there has been a total loss of Rs 2873 crore to the Delhi government’s exchequer.
Let us tell you that CBI and ED together are still conducting a scam investigation in Delhi and are also keeping an eye on the accused.Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, who was jailed in this case, has been granted bail by the Supreme Court.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has resigned from his position and his resignation has also been announced.
Atishi will now hold the post of Chief Minister in New Delhi in place of Arvind Kejriwal.
Further action will still be taken on this case and CBI and ED have given strict orders to all the accused to join this action.
