Significantly, the Indian cinema has introduced number of excellent and meaningful movies, which not only provide entertainment to the viewers, but also enlighten them about the Indian history and freedom movements. Seeing films that can bring pride to all the citizens is always a good boost of unity and memory and this is the best time to watch movies that has this kind of touch on the struggle for freedom. If you are planning to spend this day having a movie binge session with your family or if you need some inspiration on what makes this day a very important day, watching patriotic films would really help in coming up with a better appreciation of the journey of India.

Thus, let us offer 8 exemplary movies that as accurately reflect the spirit of patriotism, people’s struggle and fight for freedom as it has been this Independence Day :

    1. Border (1997)

This much acclaimed film based in Hindi is a historic film that depicts the 1971 Battle of Longewala between the Pakistani Army and the Indian soldiers where the Indian battalion that was comprised of only 150 soldiers fought against the Pakistani Army that had 2000 armed personnel and tanks as well. It is a war film depicting courage of Indian soldiers and the sacrifices they made while fighting the war, especially those in the ill-fated surrender of 1857.

    2. Lagaan (2001)

The events in Lagaan happen in the time of British imperialism and the film is a glorification of Indian spirit against domination. When the villagers realise that the British overlord Captain Andrew Russell has imposed unbearable taxes, they musters courage and dare the ‘master’ to a cricket match. With the help of sports, particularly cricket, the villagers were struggling for their rights, and this film once again emphasizes the happiness, which unites people, making that barriers rooted deep in the society become invisible.

    3. Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019)

Uri: The Surgical Strike is a 2019 Indian action war film.
Directed by Aditya Dhar, “Uri: This is a new wave of patriotic movie that showcases the 2016 Indian Army’s surgical strike on terror launch pads across the Line of Control. Recently to mention, with Vicky Kaushal in the lead role, the film’s action sequences, raw performances and of course the dialogue- ‘How’s the Josh?” keeps this film hitting high on patriotism.

    4. Chak de! India (2007)

There was hardly anyone who did not fall for Shah Rukh Khan’s portrayal of Kabir Khan in ‘Chak De! India’. He acted as the manager of the women’s hockey team. The movie was entirely centered with their hope, work and struggles trying to win the World Cup Trophy. In the movie, people are depicted to be changing their mindset by breaking barriers and uniting as on nation of one country. Surprisingly, the title song of this programme is being aired frequently at sports events held in India.

    5. Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005)

While the swelling of the ocean in their previous offers felt like a threat, ‘The Rising’ (2005) symbolizes its emergence as something different.
“The Rising: The “Ballad of Mangal Pandey” again features Aamir Khan in the titular role of Mangal Pandey who was a sepoy that participated in the uprising of 1857. Made by Ketan Mehta the movie retells the history of one of the first freedom fighters, who started the struggle for independence.

    6. Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019)

Based on the life of one of India’s true heroes – Rani Lakshmi Bai and directed by Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi and starring Kangana Ranaut as Rani Lakshmi Bai – this biographical war film is filled with courage, spirit and true patriotism.

    7. Shaheed (1965)

“Shaheed” is a drama flick made on the life of one of India’s pride freedom fighters, Bhagat Singh this Indian film is directed by S. Ram Sharma. Despite having no star like Manoj Kumar in the lead the film continues to hold appeal for children as well as adults and is all the more a fitting homage to the martyrs that gave their lives for the freedom of India.

    8. The Legend of Bhagat Sing (2002)

Based on the real events of one of the earliest Indian freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, who along with his friends in Hindustan Socialist Republican Association fought for India’s freedom, the film far takes us through Bhagat Singh’s childhood, witnessing the gruesome Jallianwala Bagh tragedy and ends with his death on 24th March 1931. It doubles up as a nostalgia for Singh’s action that played a role in the Indian independence process making it a good historical propaganda film.
