In an interview, Jaishankar discussed the forthcoming US presidential elections, noting that the American political system will ultimately determine its outcome. He asserted, “We have every confidence that we will be able to work with the President of the United States, whoever he or she may be,” reflecting on the country’s history of successful collaborations over the past two decades.
Regarding the global situation, Jaishankar acknowledged the current challenges, particularly the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Israel, which he described as a “difficult period.” Despite his optimistic outlook, he recognized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the need for solutions rather than dwelling on the problems themselves.

He further noted the grim outlook for the next five years, citing the complex issues in the Middle East, Ukraine, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and the lingering impact of COVID-19, which has disproportionately affected those who have recovered.
Jaishankar also addressed the economic challenges facing the world, including trade difficulties, foreign exchange shortages, and various disruptions. Additionally, he pointed out the role of climate events in contributing to global instability and the severe consequences they bring.

The External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, has presented a pessimistic view of the global landscape in the next five years, highlighting military tensions in the Middle East, between Ukraine and Russia, and across Southeast and East Asia, along with economic hurdles and the looming threat of climate change.
Mr Jaishankar emphasized the need for a stronger alliance between India and the United States, arguing that the world’s future hinges on the outcome of the upcoming US presidential election, with many anticipating a re-election of Donald Trump.
“I am generally a hopeful individual, focusing more on solutions than problems. However, I must admit with a serious tone that we are currently facing an exceptionally challenging time,” Mr Jaishankar stated at a Delhi event.
He further noted the escalating tensions in the Middle East and West Asia, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the resurgence of violence in Southeast and East Asia, alongside the persistent effects of COVID-19, which many have taken for granted but others are still grappling with.
The mention of tensions in the Middle East was underscored by the recent call by the United States and its European allies for Iran to “cease fire” as the risk of a full-scale conflict intensifies.
This comes after Israel’s strike on Gaza, following which Iran and Hezbollah have vowed retaliation for the assassination of Hamas’ political leader and a Hezbollah commander.
India, positioned between two allies, has urged both parties to seek peace through dialogue and diplomacy, as per Mr Jaishankar’s office’s statement in April.
In his remarks today, Mr Jaishankar expanded on the dangers of military conflict to the global economy, pointing out the rising costs of fuel and fertilizers, which were driven up by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.
He also highlighted the increasing economic challenges, including difficulties in trade, forex shortages, and various disruptions, such as the rise in pirate attacks in the Red Sea by Iran-backed Houthi militia targeting commercial vessels as a show of support for Palestinians in Gaza.
“The issues we are facing in the Red Sea and climate events are no longer just news stories… they are having worldwide disruptive effects, sometimes even rendering entire regions dysfunctional,” Mr Jaishankar concluded.
