What is the disease?
Premanand Maharaj is supposed to be ailing with a genetic illness known as polycystic kidney disease (PKD). According to the National Kidney Foundation, under this disease, cysts of fluid build up in kidneys. In case of excessive formation or excessive size of the cysts, kidneys are damaged. In the long run, the kidney may be occupied by the cysts thus compromising the functioning of the kidney and leading to kidney failure.
Similarly, a report by Johns Hopkins medicine elaborated that because in this case, the kidneys are involved the filtration features of the blood are compromised. PKD is progressive in nature, that is, it progressively gets severe. Also two types of PKD exist, which are, Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease and Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease. The latter is less common and it is diagnosed at birth.
Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is a hereditary disease where fluid-filled cysts are formed and grow in both the kidneys. This might eventually result in kidney damage and, in due time, kidney failure particularly after some years or decades. It is a long-term disease, which, when unattended, may prove to be deadly, with the kidney failing to work. The positive aspect is that once the disease is detected in time and the right therapeutic measure is taken, the illness can be handled properly. The typical symptoms can be high blood pressure, abdominal, sides, or back pain, blood in the urine, or kidney stones.
There are two types of ADPKD. According to Dr Keskar, Type 1 generally advances to end-stage kidney failure either at the 4 th or 5 th decade of life, whereas Type 2 advances at a slower pace with kidney failure usually occurring in the 7th decade of life.
Moreover, although ADPKD causes kidney failure, patients may live a long and healthy life on dialysis, as long as they adhere to treatment plan, a healthy diet plan and exercise regime and undergo frequent medical examination. A successful kidney transplant may lead to a major change in life quality and life expectancy.
