Specialist Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy two multi-mission stealth frigates, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri today.
During the commissioning ceremony of the warships, Mr Singh felicitated Navy and stated that, you have launched the indigenous F35 warship. One country has got the flying F-35 and you have got a floating F-35, which also is made in India.
The Union Defence Minister was referring to the F-35 jets of America which are characterized by stealth as well as speed.
He added that the warships are the invincible guardians of our seas because of the weapons and sensor packages.
All this warship manufacturing has been done in India. They also have weaponry and sensory packages which make them the unstoppable protectors at sea. I have further learned that a number of the advanced capabilities have also been incorporated into these warships. The military vessels are furnished with long-range strike weapons, supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, rocket launchers and torpedo launchers, combat management systems, and fire-control systems… all the cutting-edge and invaluable technologies, he noted.
Udaygiri is the second of the Project 17A stealth frigates and built at Mazagon Dok Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai. Though GRSE, Kolkata is the first ship yard to build a P17A ship, it has built Himgiri, the first of the series. Both the frigates are a generational step in their evolution over the previous models
Both the frigates received the same names, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, as older ships of the same name that served more than 30 years before decommissioning.
Lamenting on the lack of modernised stock of weapons, Mr Singh demanded utilisation of new-age technology and keeping the forces future-ready.
Gone are the days the old thinking can work. We must be in a position to expect new threats and continue coming up with new solutions. The last government under PM Modi has prioritised research and development as far as the defence sector is concerned,”.
Because of the dynamically changing demands of wars, we now need more than just updating ourselves but also need to think beyond the thought that has already been tried and tested, said Bordia.
Mr Singh also underpinned that India can easily protect its maritime borders and that it is ready to act decisively and rapidly under any a situation.
By commissioning both these vessels, strength of the Indian Navy has been enhanced as a blue water navy.”
The two are second-generation ships of the Project 17 (Shivalik) class of the frigates and both the ships are designed with significant advancements over their predecessors with designs, stealth, weapon and sensor systems able to perform a full repertoire of maritime operations in blue waters, as per officials. Udaygiri is the second unit of the Project 17A stealth frigate and was constructed by distributing shipbuilders Ltd. at Mumbai, whereas Himgiri is the initial ship to be constructed in the series within the Project 17A ships and was built up by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Kolkata. The frigates are also a generational jump over the previous designs. Udaygiri is also the first ship of her class to be delivered at the fastest pace due to modular approach to construction that Indian shipyards have adopted.
The P17A class frigates have a displacement of approximately 6,700 tons, which is about five per cent larger than the predecessor Shivalik-class frigates, discovers some sleaker form with a lesser radar cross section. They are also equipped with an advanced weapons and sensors package produced in India.
Within these frigates weapons, suite falls such weapons as supersonic surface to surface, medium range surface to air missiles, 76 mm MR Gun and comprising of a combination of 30 mm and 12.7 mm close in weapons systems.
