Russian President Vladimir Putin has given reasons as to why Moscow is keeping at the back line rather than directly coming to the rescue of Tehran despite the US striking at the nuclear sites of the Islamic Republic.
Whereas Russia and Iran have always been very close throughout decades, Putin mentioned that he is attempting to remain neutral in the conflict as there is a great number of Russian-speaking people residing in Israel.
In one of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin stated, I would like to remind you about the fact that about two million ex- Soviets and Russian Federation inhabitants are staying in Israel. It is nearly a Russian speaking nation now. And we never forget that, in the history of the modern Russia.

Putin was also opposed towards critics who have dared to criticize Russia regarding its allegiance to its allies. He referred to them as the provocateurs and the relations between Russia and the Arab countries as well as Islamic countries had long been cordial and pointed out that Muslim population of Russia is 15 per cent.
He also added that Russia was a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as well.
This was in remarks after the US had launched 14,000-kg bunker-buster bombs, and had conducted the operation Midnight Hammer attacking the key military divisions of Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan in Iran.
Trump dubbed the strikes as a spectacle in success, and said that the Iranian major nuclear enrichment centers were completely obliterated.
As a counter, Iran retaliated with a series of missiles to Israel.
The Iran Foreign minister Abbas Araqchi made an announcement that the country will not go back to peace talks or diplomacy before it retaliates first. He further said that Iran was already under the negotiation table and America and Israel were the ones to have blown the talks.
Earlier, Putin offered to mediate a ceasefire deal between Iran and Israel; however, US President Donald Trump rejected the offer, saying, “Do me a favour, mediate your own. Let’s mediate Russia first. You can worry about this later.”
Putin says US strikes on Iran are pushing world to ‘very dangerous line’
In a subsequent meeting with members of the advanced military recruits, Putin cited how the conflict in the Middle East has intensified and how outside powers have been getting involved in the matter but failed to mention the United States by name.
According to Putin, the extra-regional powers are also being pulled into a conflict. All this makes the world go to a very dangerous line.

Iran is not impressed yet by the assistance given by Russia, Iranian sources told Reuters and the country requires Putin to do more to come in its assistance in its conflict with Israel and the United States. The sources failed to specify what Tehran desired.
Although Russia has also purchased weapons in Iran and signed a 20-year strategic partnership accord with the Iranian capital back in the first half of the year, the published accord does not bear a mutual defence provision.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov when queried whether Iran had sought military assistance was quoted by state news agency RIA that Russia has numerous contacts with Iran in various fields. It is obvious that it would not be right and responsible on part of me to divulge the contents of the contacts which are being established including today in view of all the events.”
Ryabkov subsequently went on to state that Russia and Iran have an ironclad strategic partnership, and that Iran was well within its rights to protect itself.
Putin whose military is entangled in a big war of attrition in Ukraine has demonstrated not much interest in confrontation with the U.S on Iran when Trump wants to regain friendships with Moscow.
When the spokesman of the Kremlin press office, Dmitry Peskov, was asked whether the U.S. attack on Iran would influence the emerging dialogue between Russia and the United States, he said: “These are different processes.”
Russia has also added that they do not wish the development of an atomic bomb in Iran because the move would initiate the nuclear arms race in the Middle East, something that Moscow feels scared of.
The Iranian leaders allege that they feel that Russia has failed to give it enough support and believe that they have been made fools by big powers like Russia and China.
Entering the Syrian civil war on the side of a Russian ally Bashar al-Assad in 2015, Russia did not dispatch forces or additional air power when his foes were advancing on Damascus near the end of 2024 since it found the situation too risky, but gave Assad asylum when he was deposed.

Within Russia, it was urged that Moscow should assist Iran and give the country the same support that Washington had granted Ukraine (air defence systems, missiles and satellite intelligence).
Russia, China and Pakistan suggested that the 15-member United Nations Security Council should adopt a resolution on the immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East to the strikes of the U.S. on Sunday.

Russian U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia recalled How Colin Powell used to argue the case before the U.N. Security Council back in 2003 that Iraqi president Saddam Hussein posed an imminent threat to the world due to the chemical and biological weapons stockpiles of the country.
here we are being asked to believe in the fairytales of the U.S to once again torture millions of people who live in the Middle East, Nebenzia said. This finalizes our belief that nothing has been learnt by history.
